Ever since its open beta kicked off in 2013, War Thunder has offered fans of online military combat a fix beyond the likes of World of Tanks and World of Warships. Soon they will be able to take it into the next console generation, because it was announced that the game will be coming to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X next month.
Developer Gaijin Entertainment confirmed this weekend that the game will receive native next-gen versions in mid-November, which will launch alongside its next major content update, known as New Power. Gaijin also stated that War Thunder will remain a fully crossplay title on next-gen consoles, which the developer achieved this year after calling out Sony for blocking crossplay between PS4 and Xbox One players.
Besides crossplay, the New Power update will introduce a new version of War Thunder’s Dagor Engine. This will bring enhancements to nearly all of the game’s visuals, with Gaijin mentioning specific details like grass crushed by tank tracks and clouds pierced by fighter planes. Additionally, the next-gen versions will run at a 4K resolution at 60 FPS, while the PC version will get DLSS technology support that will result in a smoother and cleaner picture.
Gaijin teased that the update will also boast “a lot of other surprises,” and said that it will offer a full description of its new features over the coming days. In the meantime, players can continue devising new strategies for winning, which include recent discoveries like driving War Thunder’s tanks backwards.
War Thunder is free-to-play for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions to launch in mid-November.
