Tom Holland has arrived in Atlanta, Georgia, to begin production on Marvel Studios and Sony’s third Spider-Man film. The actor recently wrapped on the latter studio’s feature film adaptation of Uncharted, in which he portrays lead hero Nathan Drake.
Holland first portrayed Spider-Man in Marvel Studios’ Captain America: Civil War, the result of a landmark deal between Disney and Sony that allowed for the wall-crawler to appear in MCU films. However, Holland’s Spider-Man was nearly excised from future Marvel Cinematic Universe projects when Disney and Sony failed to reach an agreement to continue the partnership in August 2019. Fortunately, both parties returned to the negotiation table, partly due to the pleas of Holland himself, and inked a new deal to continue co-producing live-action Spider-Man films for the time being.
While production was expected to begin in mid-2020, the new Spider-Man film joined a long list of projects that were delayed or shutdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now that the proper safety measures can be implemented in order to protect the cast and crew, Marvel Studios will begin filming the next Spider-Man film in with director Jon Watt returning to the helm. In a video posted on his official Instagram stories, Holland arrived in Atlanta declaring, “it’s time for Spider-Man 3! Let’s go!” In a series of subsequent posts, Holland revealed that he received the script for Spider-Man 3 on an iPad, but refused to share any information about the film, noting that he’s learned his lesson about leaking spoilers. However, he did mention that he will be working on the film for the next five months.
Holland will be joined by returning co-stars Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, and Marisa Tomei, who have all appeared in the previous two Spider-Man films from Marvel Studios. Curiously, Jamie Foxx will also star in the film, reprising his role as Electro from Sony’s abandoned The Amazing Spider-Man film series. The inclusion of Foxx’s Electro, despite the classic villain existing in a completely different cinematic universe, may be explained by the involvement of Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange, a character tasked with protecting the multiverse from interdimensional threats.
During Marvel Studios’ presentation at San Diego Comic-Con 2019, Kevin Feige announced the Disney+ series titled WandaVision would lead directly into Doctor Strange in the Multiverse Madness. That fact that the series is expected to center on Scarlet Witch creating an alternate world in which she is living an idyllic life with The Vision, combined with Foxx’s Electro returning in Spider-Man 3, had led to speculation that Marvel Studios’ plans for the fourth phase of the MCU will involve the concept of parallel dimensions.
The prospect of introducing the multiverse to the Marvel Cinematic Universe has excited fans who believe it would provide the perfect opportunity for Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield to reprise their roles as Spider-Man. However, Sony has stated that rumors regarding Maguire and Garfield’s return for Marvel Studios’ third Spider-Man film are unconfirmed.
Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man 3 is scheduled to be released in the theaters on December 17, 2021.
