September sales data shows that Marvel’s Avenger‘s digital sales numbers were just short of Marvel’s Spider-Man, even though the web slinger’s hit is only available on the PS4.
The game, which is currently available on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, took the top spot in September on the NPD charts. Marvel’s Avengers seems to have had the most success in September with physical copies beating out the likes of Super Mario 3D All-Stars, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and Madden NFL 21, but digitally, the game has less success.
Marvel’s Avengers sold just over 2.2 million digital copies in September comparable to Marvel’s Spider-Man in the same month. Despite being a new game and co-tailing off the success of the movie franchise, Marvel’s Avengers seems to be having difficulty reaching the success of the Sony exclusive. Marvel’s Spider-Man has gone on to become one of the most successful superhero games ever released with sales numbers beating out the Batman Arkham series overall since its release in 2018.
While Marvel’s Avengers continues to be an overall success, many fans and critics have had significant issues with the quality of the game with bugs plaguing the overall experience. While Crystal Dynamics has addressed some issues in Marvel’s Avengers with patch releases, the game still remains hampered by some unfortunate issues that have caused many players to drop it overall.
The issues with the game has since caused developer Crystal Dynamics to delay the next-gen versions of Marvel’s Avengers. Crystal Dynamics announced the news along with the latest patch update citing the focus on ensuring the current gen version is as bug free as possible, a key thing to note is that players who currently own the game, will still be able to play the current-gen versions on next-gen consoles.
Despite the news, Crystal Dynamics has since clarified that the addition of Kate Bishop and a new storyline will still be available for Marvel’s Avengers this year. The developer has clarified earlier statements that the Kate Bishop DLC would be out in October with Crystal Dynamics indicating the Marvel’s Avengers DLC will instead be out before the end of 2020. The Kate Bishop DLC will take place after the story, giving players more context to the whereabouts of Kate during the main game and what occurs afterwards.
Crystal Dynamics is working to address issues with the game on multiple fronts, while every new patch update helps with the quality of the game, the delay of the DLC and dropping player base has caused some concern for the future of the game, especially with next gen consoles on the horizon.
Marvel’s Avengers is available on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions also in development.
