Saved by the Bell Trailer Gives First Look at Zack and Kelly’s Return

Peacock released a new trailer for its revival of Saved by the Bell, a direct sequel to the original sitcom of the same name. The new preview offers audiences their first glimpse at the return of Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Tiffani Thiessen as Zack Morris and Kelly Kapowski, respectively.

The original series debuted in 1987 as a Disney Channel teen sitcom titled Good Morning, Miss Bliss before being canceled after a single 13-episode season. Creator Peter Engel had been asked to develop the pilot by then-president of the NBC Brandon Tartikoff in 1986 and while the network ultimately decided against picking up the series, Tartikoff believed there were enough elements of the sitcom that worked to merit retooling the series following its cancelation at the Disney Channel. After being retitled Saved by the Bell and replacing a majority of Miss Bliss cast, the series shifted its focus to the teenage characters and explored issues including drug use, driving under the influence, death, and environmental causes.

In addition to Gosselaar and Thiessen returning, Peacock’s revival of Saved by the Bell will see original cast members Mario Lopez and Elizabeth Berkley reprise their respective roles as Albert “A.C.” Slater and Jessie Spano. Set to a remixed version of the song “Friends Forever,” the new Saved by the Bell trailer features a number of callbacks to the original series, including Slater’s signature move of spinning a chair around before sitting in it, a reunion of the band called Zack Attack, and a brief appearance by math teacher Mr. Dewey. The preview also delves into the drama the new generation of characters will face as new students arrive at Bayside High School. However, Principal Ronald Toddman probably best sums up the feelings of long-time fans when he declares, “I just care about Zack and Kelly!”

Per the official synopsis of the series, Saved by the Bell finds California governor Zack Morris under heavy criticism for closing multiple underfunded high schools. As a result, the students affected by the closures are sent to well-funded schools, including Bayside High. While the privileged students are given a “much-needed dose of reality” by the new arrivals, Slater, who now works as a gym teacher at Bayside, is excited to welcome the newcomers and share his own high school experiences with them.

Saved by the Bell joins a growing list of sitcoms from the ’80s and ’90s being revived decades after originally going off the air. Sony is developing a revival of Who’s the Boss with original stars Tony Danza and Alyssa Milano returning while Will Smith is producing a dramatic reimagining of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

However, not every revival is returning to familiar characters and stories, as is the case with ABC’s reboot of The Wonder Years. While the original series centered on the suburban middle-class life of a boy named Kevin Arnolds, the reboot will turn its attention to a black middle-class family in Montgomery, Alabama, during the ’60s.

Saved by the Bell will premiere exclusively on Peacock on November 25, 2020.
