Fans of Sony already know that the PS5 console is selling incredibly fast, as this much was made clear during the hectic next generation pre-orders that left many without a console. Until now, it wasn’t clear just how many consoles were made available or how well the device has been selling, but Sony has given fans some insight on that now.
The PS4 sold impressive numbers, but the PS5 is poised to topple that console very quickly if the current rate of sales continues. According to Sony, the first 12 hours of pre-orders for the new console in the United States have already seen the console sell more than the PS4 did in the first 12 weeks of its lifetime.
The PS4 isn’t the best selling console of all time, as that right is still held by the PS2, but it was certainly no joke. The fact that the PS5 is outpacing it so much even before launch is incredible, and could mean some big things for the future of gaming.
Obviously there’s no way to tell at the moment whether this trend will continue, but given that a majority of Sony fans weren’t able to pre-order the PS5, it seems likely that sales will continue to skyrocket once the console finally hits shelves. There are still a lot of players eager to get their hands on everything that the PS5 has to offer, and it could be some time before that demand finally wears off and things level out. At the very least, players should expect to see more sales throughout Christmas.
At this point, it seems Sony is more concerned with meeting demand than with advertising, as representatives of the company have made statements several times that there may not be enough supply for everyone at launch. If Sony does manage to keep up with customers, it could very well be on the way to toppling its own record with the PS2. The PS2 was estimated to have sold over 155 million consoles, whereas the PS4 is currently sitting somewhere around 112 million. With how efficiently the PS5 is outpacing its predecessor, it will be interesting to see if it sets a new precedent for console sales.
Fans won’t have to wait too terribly long to finally get their hands on one, though, as the PS5 hits shelves on November 12th, just over two weeks away. With any luck, a majority of gamers will be able to find one before the consoles sell out, but at this point, that isn’t a guarantee.
