Amazon Says Borat 2 Drew ‘Tens of Millions’ of Viewers, Others Disagree

Borat is back in yet another trip across America that released recently to Amazon Prime Video. The movie, whose full title is Borat Subsequent Moviefilm: Delivery of Prodigious Bribe to American Regime for Make Benefit Once Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan, pulled in some impressive viewership numbers according to Amazon. It’s been claimed that the film was viewed by “tens of millions” over its opening weekend, though the company would not get any more specific.

That said, a third party, Samba TV, has estimated that the film was viewed by 1.6 million households over its opening weekend. Amazon claims that this number is incorrect but, interestingly, declined to provide any figures of its own in response. This makes for a rather stark contrast between the two estimates, and potentially suggests that one of the two parties involved is using some questionable math to get their estimates. Without any raw data however, it’s difficult to say which number is closer to the reality.

This is hardly a new phenomenon, as Amazon, like most streaming services, is quite famously tight-lipped about specific numbers. They don’t even provide an exact figure for how many people are subscribed to Prime, only announcing that they had topped 150 million in January. Still, the head of Amazon Studios, Jennifer Salke, was quick to praise the film. “Sacha has masterfully created one of the most well-received films of these unprecedented times — showcasing some of the best and the worst of us, wrapped in one outrageous moment after another.” While “one of the most well-received” is undeniably subjective, it does seem that the film has been received well by both audiences and critics alike.

Of course this raises the question of whether or not Amazon might be interested in picking up more films like Borat in future. While the exact numbers are in dispute, it seems to have done well enough for them. Salke continued on to say: “With the tremendous launch of this global, tentpole movie, it’s clear our customers around the world want content that is both relevant and entertaining.” So perhaps Amazon is seeing the value in more satirical films with a political edge.
