Cyberpunk 2077 Current-Gen Versions Likely Reason for Delay

The short delay of Cyberpunk 2077 to December for polishing has been clarified further via a conference call following its announcement. The call confirmed that current-gen versions of the game are the primary reason for the delay, as Cyberpunk 2077 supposedly plays well on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X.

The latest Cyberpunk 2077 delay was certainly unexpected, but learning that current-gen consoles are to blame is likely to cause some uproar among PC players and next-gen adopters who were excited for the game. Tweeted out by popular industry insider Nibellion, CD Projekt Red stated within the conference call that PC and next-gen versions are complete and that “the company is currently focused on polishing current gen versions.”

In response to the tweet, many players simply said to just launch the game on the platforms it is finished for, with the current-gen versions coming later on. This seems unlikely, however, as the damage from the delay has already been done. With one fan in particular suffering because they took off work for Cyberpunk 2077’s previous launch day, and developers receiving death threats for pushing the game back once again, this latest news is unlikely to make things easier for those working at CD Projekt Red.

Pap Business captured the transcript of the call, which featured CEO Adam Kicinski explaining the delay. The company’s CEO stated that “having these three more weeks gives us the chance to fix this and that,” going on to say that “this situation is different” in regards to previous delays. While the company “finalizing the process concerning current gen consoles” is understandable, the decision has made Cyberpunk 2077 ineligible for The Game Awards 2020.

Many gamers believe this change makes The Last of Us Part 2 a shoe-in for Game of the Year and other major awards at the event, though other games like FF7 Remake and Ghost of Tsushima could still bring home some honors as well. Regardless, CD Projekt Red stands by the decision in the conference call, stating that the studio “really [has] something amazing” with Cyberpunk 2077 and “everyone will understand” why the game has taken so long to be released when it finally arrives.

Whether fans like the reason or not, the two-time Gamescom Best of Show winner’s delay has happened likely because of current-gen consoles. With other cross-gen games like Horizon Forbidden West and Halo Infinite still on the way, debates regarding support for last-gen versions of games will likely rage on for some time — with mentions likely being made about this Cyberpunk 2077 delay.

Cyberpunk 2077 launches December 10 for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions also in development.
