Control: Ultimate Edition Surprise-Launched on Nintendo Switch

Fans of Control: Ultimate Edition have reason to celebrate, as the game is now available for the first time on Nintendo Switch. Today’s Nintendo Direct Mini revealed a lot of new information about upcoming games and other developments, but few were expecting the surprise launch of this award winning game on the Switch.

Control: Ultimate Edition released earlier this year in August, bringing the hit 2019 title to PS4 and Xbox One alongside planned PS5 and Xbox Series X releases as well. Until today, there was nothing hinting at a Switch release, but it seems the developers have found a way to make it happen after all through the use of cloud gaming.

Cloud gaming isn’t new by any means, but it’s slowly making its way into mainstream gaming. Essentially, this lets players access games through the internet rather than through downloaded software, and has a few ups and downs. Control: Ultimate Edition is only available on the Switch through this method.

Interested players should head over to the Nintendo eShop and search for Control: Ultimate Edition. Here, players will find a free launcher program which must be downloaded and installed. This will give access to a 10 minute game demo, and after playing through five minutes of this demo, an option will appear to purchase the full game. Doing so will then give the player access to everything the game has to offer on the Switch by streaming it to the console.

On the bright side, since the game is effectively streamed to the console over wi-fi, the graphics will be far better than anything that the Switch could accomplish on its own. As great as the Nintendo Switch is, its limited hardware puts it behind the PS4 and Xbox One in terms of graphical potential. On the other hand, though, players will almost certainly experience a degree of latency playing Control: Ultimate Edition in this way. Most players would agree that this is still better than nothing, but it does present an odd clash of ideologies with the Switch.

A major selling point of the Switch is the ability for players to take gaming with them anywhere they go, but since Control: Ultimate Edition will require a stable internet connection whenever the player is using it, this won’t be possible. Either way, it’s nice to see that Switch players will get the chance to experience Control: Ultimate Edition in all its glory, but the Nintendo surprise launches aren’t becoming any less surprising as time goes on.

Control: Ultimate Edition is available now on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One, and later on PS5 and Xbox Series X.
