Watch Dogs Legion, the latest game in Ubisoft’s hacktivist franchise, is finally available and takes players to a near future version of London, England. In addition to a new virtual playground to explore, Ubisoft has made the surprising decision to completely forego a traditional lead character, instead letting players recruit and play as nearly any NPC in the game. While this mechanic has been a hit with reviewers so far, it hasn’t stopped the company from bringing back a few familiar faces as well.
As part of the season pass for Watch Dogs Legion, Ubisoft recently confirmed that two iconic characters from the series are making their return. Watch Dogs lead, Aiden Pearce and the digital mask wearing DedSec operative Wrench from Watch Dogs 2 are going to be back for the Bloodlines DLC expansion for Watch Dogs Legion. Naturally, hearing all these familiar names started to get the community wondering if Watch Dogs 2 protagonist Marcus Holloway would also be making a comeback. While Ubisoft has hinted at this, for now, nothing appears to be happening on that front.
The latest news comes from the voice actor for Marcus himself, Ruffin Prentiss. Although Prentiss sees the question quite often, he’s now confirmed that Ubisoft has not reached out to him regarding reprising the role. He’s more than willing to do it, however, calling the role as one of his favorite things that he’s ever done. After hearing the returning character news, Prentiss had a little hope that Marcus would be next, especially considering how close Wrench and his character were.
It’s also unlikely that Ubisoft would recast Marcus considering that Pearce voice actor Noam Jenkins as well as Shawn Baichoo as Wrench are reprising their roles. Even with a lack of activity surrounding Marcus, Prentiss doesn’t appear to be upset by the decision. When speaking of Wrench being chosen for the expansion, Prentiss praised the work done by Biachoo, saying ‘He’s earned this moment. He deserves every second of it. And the fans, the way they received Wrench, absolutely valid.’
At this point, the odds of seeing Marcus Holloway in Watch Dogs Legion seem slim, especially considering that the DLC plans have already been revealed. However, Prentiss remains hopeful and ready should Ubisoft ever decide to call. The character’s story arch from Watch Dogs 2 wasn’t definitively closed and it even heavily teased the eventual move to London.
And then of course Wrench is in the game as well. He’s my main partner in crime in Watch Dogs 2. So I think the realm of possibility still exists, but I have heard nothing from Ubisoft – but if they call, I’d absolutely jump back in.
It’s always a possibility that if the game does well enough, Ubisoft could continue producing DLC for it, similar to the seasonal model that many of its games currently operate under. There’s also a precedent for this kind of fan pressure bringing things to life, as the most recent example is with another Ubisoft game, Scott Pilgrim vs The World: The Game. After getting delisted years ago, fans have continued to push for Ubisoft to bring the game back. With the 10 year anniversary this year, fan pressure continued to mount until the Summer reveal of a Complete Edition scheduled for a late 2020 release.
Watch Dogs: Legion releases October 29 for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One. It releases with the Xbox Series X on November 10 and PS5 on November 24.
