Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Zombies Leak Hints at Perks, Pack-A-Punch, More

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is only a couple of weeks away from release, with a new, action-packed launch trailer coming out not too long ago. Among the many things fans have to look forward to with this new title is the returning and fan-favorite Zombies mode, though it sounds as if it’s undergone some serious changes for Cold War.

A rather lengthy Reddit post claims to have uncovered and leaked a massive amount of info about Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War‘s Zombies mode, detailing a bunch of new features that have already generated mixed feelings within players. It should be noted, of course, that this info may not be accurate and should be taken with a pinch of salt. Though given how much accurate info has been leaked in the past, including Black Ops Cold War‘s very existence, it does seem quite viable.

Firstly, the Alternate Ammo Types from previous games have been rebranded to Ammo Mods. There are four different types – Cryofreeze (ice damage), Dead Wire (electric damage), Napalm Blast (fire damage), and Brain Rot (turns zombies into allies) – and, in a first, players can choose which mod they want when Pack-a-Punching (the mode’s upgrade system). There is also a new Perk that can activate a random mod.

Secondly, there are Field Upgrades, which will act as a replacement for Specialists. Apparently, they work on a time-based recharge system, meaning once used, players will need to wait awhile before using them again. The leak claims there are eight of them, but were only able to uncover details for five, suggesting the other three are being saved for DLC.

Two of them, the Energy Mine and Aether Shroud, have already been shown in the initial Zombies reveal trailer, and the Frost Blast can be seen in the First Look video. The other two listed are a Ring of Fire that boosts damage and burns enemies and a self-explanatory Healing Aura.

Next is Runes, possibly the biggest inclusion to the mode. These are its new upgrade system and can be used to permanently upgrade ammo mods, perks, field upgrades, and weapon classes. Players will need to spend a new currency called Aetherium to do so, which can be earned simply by playing the game. According to the leak, there are 72 upgrades in total, which is undeniably massive.

But arguably the most controversial addition is an armor mechanic, one that works similarly to Call of Duty: Warzone. Players can have up to three armor plates at once and can be further upgraded at armor stations. Judging by the responses from fans, there are worries that this will make the mode too easy, but it’s too early to know how it will be balanced, assuming the leak is accurate.

It’s debatable whether this is more controversial than the fact that the PS4 and PS5 versions of Cold War will have a unique Zombies mode that won’t be available for the other versions until next year, which quickly drew criticism upon its announcement.

The full list can be found on Reddit and also mentions some other minor details, like zombies having health bars and there now being a mini-map and compass, just like Warzone and Modern Warfare.

In other news, Call of Duty Mobile received its own Halloween update recently, which has added a brand-new Halloween themed map.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will release for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on November 13th.
