For better or worse, the Nintendo Switch has become the perfect jumping-on point for players that are unfamiliar with the brand and looking for a way to experience some of the best games the company has to offer. Nintendo has bolstered the Nintendo Switch first-party games lineup by porting almost the entirety of the Wii U’s back catalogue of games. And eventually, the entire catalogue if the Legend of Zelda 35th Anniversary rumors are to be believed.
Until then, there are still two games from the Wii U on the way including Pikmin 3 Deluxe which is releasing later this week, and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury in February 2021. For players that are considering picking up Pikmin 3 Deluxe but are still on the fence, here’s everything there’s is to know about the upcoming game.
Pikmin 3 is a real-time strategy puzzle game that first released on the Nintendo Wii U in late 2013. The game is a direct sequel to Pikmin and Pikmin 2, which released on GameCube in 2001 and 2004 respectively, and follows a group of three aliens that land on the mysterious planet PNF-404 in search of food to help fight their home planets ongoing famine. Upon landing on the mysterious planet, each of the aliens discovers colorful plantlike creatures known as Pikmin and the player can use the Pikmin to help with exploration, fighting off dangerous creatures, and to solve puzzles.
There are five different types of Pikmin, each with their own unique abilities: Red Pikmin are great for battle and can withstand extreme heat, Yellow Pikmin can be thrown higher and use rock bombs, Blue Pikmin can swim in the water, Grey Pikmin can be used to destroy tough barriers, and Pink Pikmin can carry objects over water and fight off airborne creatures. Players can control up to 100 Pikmin at once and use each of the different types to carry out different missions.
As with most of the “Deluxe” Nintendo Switch versions of Wii U games, Pikmin 3 Deluxe is by far the best way to experience the beloved puzzle game. First of all, when it comes to new content, Pikmin 3 Deluxe is bringing the goods including all previously released DLC, split-screen coop play for the story mode, three new difficulties for story mode, new side-story missions, a prologue and epilogue featuring Captain Olimar and Louie, the return of Piklopedia which was last seen in Pikmin 2, and more.
On top of the additional content, Pikmin 3 Deluxe has made a number of quality of life improvements that make the game easier to control and more enjoyable to play. For example, the new Ultra Spicy mode adds more of a challenge by limiting how many Pikmin players can control at one time. New control settings allow players to choose between the stick and gyro controls, a new whistle ability can call nearby idle Pikmin without affecting those on a mission, and the charge option will now only command the type of Pikmin selected rather than sending the whole squad.
Pikmin 3 Deluxe will be exclusive to the Nintendo Switch and releases on Friday, October 30, with a demo available right now on the Nintendo eShop. As for special editions and pre-order bonuses, there’s none of that going on for this Nintendo release. Buying Pikmin 3 Deluxe gives players all of its available content with nothing restricted due to retailer preference or expensive editions.
With only a couple of days until the release of Pikmin 3 Deluxe, reviews for the game have started appearing online and have been largely positive across the board. Considering how long its been since the original Pikmin 3 released on Wii U, obviously, longtime fans of the series would rather see Pikmin 4, however, a range of quality of life improvements and well-aged graphics have made it a great jumping-on point for new players.
Pikmin 3 Deluxe releases on October 30th, exclusively for Nintendo Switch.
