Destiny 2 will forever change once Beyond Light hits on November 10. Players will further explore the ominous pyramid ships and accept what they have to offer in the form of Stasis. However, players aren’t the only ones interested in Darkness, as the expansion’s launch trailer pits the different factions of Beyond Light against each other.
The game is entering a new chapter with Beyond Light, since it sets up three years’ worth of story and content. Destiny 2 players will be saying goodbye to many places and activities they’ve grown accustomed to while greeting brand-new ones and welcoming back old favorites such as the Cosmodrome and the Vault of Glass.
Regardless, the trailer starts out with an interesting visual parallel between the ending of Season of Arrivals and a shot of the pyramid ship on Europa, as discovered by The Exo Stranger and her team. Through recent events, players have noticed that darkness has now fully arrived in the solar system. Very soon, Guardians will be called to investigate the invasion and understand the Darkness’ true goal.
One clash with the Darkness will happen on Europa, where Beyond Light mainly takes place. Players will answer a distress call sent out by Variks, a returning character. He warns of the particularly potent influence Darkness has on the icy moon and how a fanatical faction of the Fallen has decided to embrace it. This group, called the House of Salvation, is led by Eramis. She is the first to find and wield Stasis, a dark new element, and aims to share it with all her followers instead of enslaving them.
Another main character, The Exo Stranger, also wants to liberate Stasis, believing that it is a tool that can be used for good. She states that the Vanguard, protectors of humanity, are too short sighted to embrace the Light and not the Dark. The Exo Stranger aims to create some balance, providing a haven for those who also want to embrace the Darkness. In the trailer she actually wields Stasis deftly, which is perhaps the first showcase of a “Dark Guardian,” a concept fans have wanted to see for a long time.
As players learn new Stasis abilities, they will also fight Eramis’ lieutenants, each of which wield Stasis in different ways. These look to be quite formidable foes, as they are champions of the Darkness just like Guardians are of the Light. So far, players hadn’t seen an enemy race wield Guardian-level powers, and this will further change as more enemies adopt Stasis – starting with Season of the Hunt.
Destiny 2 is available now on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, and the Beyond Light expansion will release November 10. PS5 and Xbox Series X versions are currently in development.
