With the release of next generation consoles just two weeks away, the console wars are raging on at an all time high. Fans of the PS5 have just won another victory, however, as it appears that the console is drastically outpacing its competitor, at least in UK markets. The Xbox Series X lags behind in terms of pre-orders in that country, but it remains to be seen whether that stays the same after launch.
For each console, fans have the option to order a standard version or a cheaper, pared down alternative. In the case of the PS5, there is also a PS5 Digital Edition which lacks a disc drive, and the Xbox Series X has a smaller, less powerful counterpart called the Xbox Series S. In both cases, Sony is winning.
The survey was conducted with 534 UK based console gamers, and the results are fairly conclusive. Alongside detailing which console gamers pre-ordered more of, the survey also reveals which Xbox Series X and PS5 exclusive games fans are most excited about.
Of those participants that successfully pre-ordered a next generation console, 58% preordered the standard PS5 and 24% preordered a PS5 Digital Edition, whereas 38% preordered an Xbox Series X and 7% preordered an Xbox Series S. Looking at this data it is plain to see which has the upper hand, as the PS5 has 50% more pre-orders than the Xbox Series X and the PS5 Digital Edition is outselling the Xbox Series S by more than three times. The overlap in percentages indicates that some users pre-ordered multiple consoles.
The same patterns hold true for those in the survey that tried to pre-order a next gen console but were unable to. 57% tried to preorder a standard PS5 and 22% tried to preorder a digital edition of the PS5, whereas 27% tried to preorder an Xbox Series X and only 6% tried topreorder an Xbox Series S. In this case, the numbers are even more disparate, with the PS5 having over double the attempts. In addition to this, the most anticipated exclusive games for both consoles as well as non exclusive games were revealed by the survey participants.
For the PS5, fans are most excited to play Spider-Man: Miles Morales, God of War: Ragnarok, and Final Fantasy 16, and Xbox players are most eager to play Halo: Infinite, Forza Motorsport 8, Fable, and State of Decay 3. In terms of non-exclusive titles, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, Fifa 21, and Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla claim the top three spots.
The PS5 releases on November 12th.
