Pikmin 3 Deluxe: How to Reset Gyro Controls | Game Rant

A lot of people missed out on Pikmin 3 when the game first released, being that it was exclusive to the underperforming Wii U. That’s something today’s release of Pikmin 3 Deluxe on the Nintendo Switch finally corrects, bringing the 2013 real-time strategy game to a wide audience for the first time.

Best of all, the Switch version earns that “Deluxe” in its title with a number of new features and improvements that critics largely agree make Pikmin 3 a better game than it already was. One of these improvements is adding gyro-aiming to the game. The original version benefitted from being able to let players use the Wii controller to aim where they want their Pikmin to go, and with the Switch’s motion controls, the game is able to maintain that utility.

However, while Pikmin games have long been improved by motion controls, Pikmin 3 on the Switch has to deal with a problem that previous games didn’t, and that’s gyro drift. Many Switch players are familiar with the way the gyro sensors in their Joy-Cons and Pro Controllers can fall out of sync, often to the point they can’t readjust their aim without changing their hands’ positioning. Odds are at least a few players have already come across this issue trying to make their way through the game’s campaign and bonus missions.

Thankfully, as with most games that utilize gyro-aiming on the console, players can reset their aim using a dedicated button. In Pikmin 3 Deluxe’s case, pressing the R button instantly resets the cursor to the center of the screen, making the position of players hands when they press the button the new default position.

There are only a few real downsides to this, starting with the fact that the gyro controls will inevitably drift again at some point, so players will likely have to readjust multiple times throughout an average play session. Similarly, while the game supports the ability to play using a single Joy-Con, it doesn’t come with a dedicated reset button for the cursor. The closet thing it has is the ability to reorient the camera behind a player’s character by pressing down on the control stick.

Despite these issues, it’s easy to argue that the Switch controls are still a step up from what came before. While the original version offers smoother motion controls with the Wiimote, key features like Pikmin 3‘s overhead map are tied to the Wii U GamePad’s screen, leaving Wiimote players at a serious disadvantage. This is a problem that Pikmin 3 Deluxe addresses, as the way Nintendo has streamlined things for the Switch version means players can access everything regardless of control scheme, and without having to sacrifice motion controls if they don’t want to.

Pikmin 3 Deluxe is now available for the Switch.
