Twitch Bans S1mple for Fourth Time | Game Rant

Twitch continues its streak of cracking down on streamers who violate their community guidelines, this time dropping the hammer on one of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive‘s popular players. Unlike the platform’s recent DMCA-inspired content culling, “aggression” earned this streamer his fourth temporary ban.

Oleksandr ‘S1mple’ Kostyliev, arguably one of the best CS:GO players in the world, was banned on October 30 for saying a Russian slur. The leading player of Natus Vincere’s CS:GO squad, S1mple has been banned for aggressive behavior and the use of slurs before, as recently as July 30. Some fans are concerned that S1mple’s fourth strike-out will put him at risk of incurring a permanent ban.

Even though S1mple draws impressive viewership numbers, no Twitch celebrity is above the law of the platform’s community guidelines. Twitch famously banned the streaming mega-star, Dr. Disrespect, after controversial violations. That said, S1mple does not seem as bothered by this most recent ban as he was with proceeding incidents, offering an explanation on Twitter.

S1mple referred to the ban as “funny,” and said that he used the slur in response to another player who used the word on his stream. S1mple does not necessarily depend on Twitch for income given his CS:GO winnings, and a permanent ban would likely not lead to the end of his fanbase or viewership. Dr. Disrespect recently announced plans to start streaming on YouTube, which is also an option that is also readily available to S1mple.

There is no guarantee, however, that YouTube would be more forgiving of controversial content. The infamous online commentator Leafy was permanently banned on both YouTube and Twitch for hate speech in September. While S1mple’s violations do not appear to be as flagrant as Leafy’s, repeated offenses are likely to be treated more seriously than a first-time ban.

Twitch has also recently made waves for a spate of content bans stemming from copyright violations without clear citations, leading a number of viewers to cry foul. S1mple’s case seems more cut and dry, and the streaming platform seems to take hate speech violations on high-profile streams seriously.

This has been a big year for high-profile bans. Dozens of high profile accounts have been hit with temporary and permanent bans in 2020 for inappropriate behavior including the use of sexist, homophobic, and racist slurs. For example, the extremely popular German Twitch Partner and YouTuber MontanaBlack88 was banned for posting videos of himself harassing women last month.

At time of writing, no duration has been provided for S1mple’s ban. As with all Twitch bans, visiting the Counter-Strike: Global Offensive streamer’s page currently displays the message “Sorry. Unless you’ve got a time machine, that content is unavailable.”
