PS5 and Switch Side-by-Side Photos Show Huge Size Gap | Game Rant

New photos posted show the PlayStation 5 and a docked Nintendo Switch side-by-side on a shelf, revealing a massive size difference. The images show that concerns about the size of the PS5 are warranted, given the huge amount of shelf space the console will take up.

The PlayStation 5 promises a bigger experience than its predecessors in almost every way, including better performance, graphics, and massively reduced loading times. The console itself is bigger than previous PlayStation consoles as well, surprising fans who expected a next-gen console to have a form factor similar to that of the PlayStation 4. This puts many in the position of reconfiguring their entertainment centers to account for the size of the PS5, since spaces occupied by a PS4 may not be large enough for a PS5.

The photos show that the PlayStation 5 occupies quite a bit of space whether positioned vertically or horizontally. When positioned vertically, it appears to be about three times as tall as the Switch. Plus, even when positioned horizontally, it is still as tall as the docked Nintendo Switch, and slightly wider, as well. Amusingly, IGN’s tweeted photos also provide a comparison shot between the PlayStation 5 and a banana. Since even the Switch would dwarf a banana, the PlayStation 5 makes it seem absolutely miniscule.

Although the size of the PS5 will likely not deter many would-be owners, it has provided an easy target for competitors to joke about. For example, an Xbox social media account used forced perspective to imply the PS5 was the size of a skyscraper, as compared to the more reasonably-sized Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. Granted, not every comment about the PS5 lands well. Xbox tweeted and then deleted a jab about the process of setting the PlayStation 5 on its side, which requires a screwdriver.

It’s worth noting that this is the standard version of the PS5, rather than the PS5 Digital Edition, which does not include a disk drive. This will remove the bulging disk slot, but due to the way the console is curved, the Digital Edition will likely not reduce its profile very much. Even for those that do not need the disk drive, the PS5 Digital Edition will be hard to find, with rumors suggesting that Sony is primarily manufacturing PS5s with disk drives.

Amusingly, the size comparison could make the PS5 look even larger if IGN used a Switch Lite, the handheld-only variant of Nintendo’s hit console. The Switch Lite has a smaller screen than the regular Switch; plus, the inclusion of the dock makes the Switch in the image seem slightly taller. Without the dock, the Switch Lite would make the PS5 look even larger and bulkier. Such comparison photos will likely emerge when the PlayStation 5 releases in just a few weeks.

The PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Digital Edition will both release on November 12th.
