PS4 Support Will Likely Continue Through 2022 | Game Rant

PlayStation is going to be incredibly busy these next few weeks, considering the PS5 launch date is just around the corner. PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan has been giving interviews to press outlets in the weeks leading up to launch to inform the public and further raise anticipation.

A recent interview with Jim Ryan by way of GamesIndustry.biz shares a ton of details about the PS5’s upcoming launch, as well as what the future will hold for the PS4 after Sony’s next-generation console launches. Specifically, it seems like at least some PS5 exclusive titles will continue to make their way to PS4 even as far in the future as 2022.

For those who haven’t been following the PS5 launch lineup too closely, it’s undoubtedly one of the most impressive console launch lineups in quite some time. Titles like Demon’s Souls Remake and Spider-Man: Miles Morales look incredibly impressive on the new hardware and are sure to bolster console sales at launch.

However, many fans have noticed that many PS5 titles like Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Horizon Forbidden West are coming to PS4 as well. The reactions to this news have been somewhat mixed within the PlayStation fan community, but according to Jim Ryan, this all seems to be a key part of Sony’s plan moving forward.

Jim Ryan’s GamesIndustry.biz interview briefly touches on this exact subject when the topic of PS5’s launch subtly shifts to the PS4’s future. Ryan says that Sony’s eyes are also on PS4’s future just like PS5’s, considering the platform still has an incredibly large install base. When talking about PS4 player’s gaming activity during the coronavirus pandemic, Ryan said, “That can be quite powerful, because in 2021, 2022…that PS4 community that we’ve spoken about, they will be the vast majority of people on PlayStations during that time. It is crucial that we keep them engaged and happy.”

Ryan doesn’t make any concrete statements outright saying that PS5 exclusive titles will make their way to PS4, but it can be easily inferred by the dates he mentions. If Ryan claims that the PS4 will be supported well into 2021 and even 2022, the console will have to receive new software over the years. It only makes sense that the new software in question would be PS5 titles made to run on the PS4’s hardware. Sony has given mixed responses regarding PS4 cross-gen support with PS5 in the past, but if what Ryan is saying is true it seems that Sony may have changed its tune after seeing the PS4’s install base at work over the past six months.

The full interview with Ryan via GamesIndustry.biz provides plenty of insight into what the PS5 may look like past its launch among other things. The Xbox Series X and PS5 launches are right around the corner now. It will be interesting to see how Sony and Microsoft’s consoles fare when December rolls around.
