Raspberry Pi has released the brand new Raspberry Pi 400, a PC built straight into a keyboard that users can plug directly into a monitor to use. Inspired by the home computers of the 1980s, including BBC Micros, ZX Spectrums, Commodore 64, Amigas, and more, Raspberry Pi 400 is positioned as a “complete personal computer, built into a compact keyboard.”
Since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, Raspberry Pi has reported a rapid increase in sales for the Raspberry Pi 4, which is roughly 40x as powerful as the original Raspberry Pi. However, the company wanted to offer a product that matched user-friendliness and performance with form factor, hence the Raspberry Pi 400. This minimalist approach is something the company argued takes up less desk space while offering a “simpler set-up experience” for users as they work from home.
With the Raspberry Pi integrated intrinsically into the keyboard, the Raspberry Pi 400 comes with no separate system unit and case and no keyboard cable. Instead, it is “Just a computer, a power supply, a monitor cable, and (sometimes) a mouse.” Featuring the same processor as the Raspberry Pi 4, the Raspberry Pi 400 features “specially designed thermals” to keep the computer cool and quiet when in use, whether it’s for work, general browsing, or even for PC gaming. It comes with a quad-core 64-bit processor, 4GB of RAM, wireless networking, dual-display output, and 4K video playback alongside a 40-pin GPIO header.
Describing the Raspberry Pi 400 as a “faster, cooler 4GB Raspberry Pi,” the product is priced at $70 for the computer on its own. It also comes in a “ready-to-go-kit,” which is available at $100. The keyboard itself is available with UK and US English language options and boasts several other languages fans around the world can choose from, including Spanish, French, Germain, and Italian, with more planned for later release.
The Raspberry Pi 400 Personal Computer Kit is described as the “Christmas morning” product and contains everything a curious newcomer to Raspberry Pi will need to get it up and running with minimal fuss, providing the “best possible out-of-box experience.” The kit itself comes with a Raspberry Pi 400 computer, an official USB mouse, an official USB-C power supply, an SD card with Raspberry Pi OS pre-installed on it, a micro HDMI to HDMI cable, and the official Raspberry Pi Beginner’s Guide.
UK, US, and French Raspberry Pi 400 kits and computers are available to purchase right now. German, Spanish, and Italian kits will be available at Raspberry Pi approved resellers by next week.
