Activision Blizzard is one of the largest publishers in the gaming industry, with the company holding the rights to dozens of iconic IPs. According to the company’s Chief Operating Officer Daniel Alegre, every major Activision Blizzard franchise may be coming to the mobile platform.
Android and iOS versions for all the company’s games is a logical business move given the incredible success of Call of Duty Mobile. With CoD Mobile hitting major revenue milestones and being downloaded millions of times, the on-the-go version of the FPS series has proven how viable the platform can be for video game publishers. With millions of gamers in China pre-registering to download the portable CoD game, that success will surely continue for some time.
With Diablo Immortal looking like a quality game despite the many fan objections after its reveal, Activision Blizzard seems laser-focused on continuing to release massive mobile games based on its most popular franchises. In an Activision Blizzard investor call, the company’s COO stated clearly that a major goal of the company is to “bring all [its] franchises to mobile” over the next several years. With a vast selection of games for the company to choose from, Activision Blizzard has plenty of options for different kinds of mobile games going forward.
With mobile Overwatch clones doing very well, a proper version of the hero shooter certainly seems like a possibility. While it would be challenging to replicate the smooth, intense gameplay of an objective-focused team game on phones, the potential success makes the game an obvious contender from a business perspective. It is equally possible that spinoff mini games could come for some of Overwatch’s heroes, with special rewards obtainable for the main game.
While games like World of Warcraft and StarCraft would also be hard to replicate on phones, two classic IPs held by the company make perfect sense for mobile. The lovable purple dragon Spyro would translate easily to the platform, as the simple but addictive collect-a-thon gameplay the character is known for pairs well with the pickup and play nature of mobile games. An even better option would be the recently revived Tony Hawk Pro Skater series, as a skateboarding game would work well with the mobile limitations regarding controls.
With an endless runner-style mobile game called Crash Bandicoot: On The Run releasing next year, Activision Blizzard’s promise to “invest meaningfully” into mobile games seems like it is being kept. While there is no telling which franchises come to mobile first, it seems like ever Activision Blizzard franchise is destined to come to phones eventually.
