While George Orwell’s 1945 novella Animal Farm was originally written as a satire of the rise of totalitarianism in the Soviet Union, the allegorical story of revolution and the abuse of political power has managed to remain relevant throughout the decades. In that time, the book has been adapted a few times, and today it was confirmed that the first video game adaptation will be coming next month.
A collaboration between publisher The Dairymen, developer Nerial, and Orwell’s estate, Orwell’s Animal Farm was confirmed to be launching this fall when it was first announced in August. Today, The Dairymen and Nerial narrowed that down to an actual date, revealing that the game will be coming to PC and mobile devices on December 10.
As the first interactive version of Animal Farm, the game will let players take part in the farm animals’ overthrow of their human master and attempt to build a better, animal-led society. Like in the book, players will be tasked with assigning tasks, choosing laws, and determining which animals get to benefit. Although the game will feature familiar characters, the narrative choices Nerial is adding will let players expand upon Orwell’s story if they want and spread Animalism beyond the farm.
The Dairymen and Nerial aren’t shying away from highlighting the political nature of Animal Farm in a very political time, having announced the release date just before the US presidential election tomorrow and calling for people to vote in the game’s latest trailer. While the game itself will be missing the election, odds are the results, however they end up, will still be on a lot of people’s minds by the time it arrives.
Orwell’s Animal Farm will launch on December 10 for Mobile and PC.
