When it was initially released, No More Heroes turned heads with its strange characters and unique style. Now those who correctly predicted No More Heroes‘ port to the Switch can experience it once again, or perhaps for the first time.
While longtime fans of the series wait for No More Heroes 3, new players can now learn what makes the first two No More Heroes so special. Anyone playing through the first game may be surprised at its rather abrupt ending. That’s because the game actually has two endings, and the second one must be unlocked. Here’s how to unlock the true ending for the first No More Heroes.
Players should know going in that while getting the true ending of No More Heroes is about collecting stuff, the game itself is not exactly a collectathon. With a few exceptions like the Lovikov Balls, No More Heroes focuses primarily on combat and a few repeating mini-games. This makes what the players have to collect for the true ending all the sweeter, as it directly aids in combat. In fact, it’s the centerpiece of the combat.
In order to get the chance to see the true ending, players must collect every beam katana in the game. This sounds tricky, but really it just requires getting a lot of money. This is because, counting the one Travis starts out with, there are only four beam katanas in the game. Each one becomes available to purchase as the game goes on, from the Tsubaki to the Tsubaki Mk-III. With No More Heroes 3 delayed until 2021, players should have plenty of time to get all the cash they need.
The last katana, the Tsubaki Mk-III, is made from the remains of another Beam Katana, the one that belonged to Travis’ mentor Thunder Ryu. He doesn’t use it anymore after Travis takes down the Rank 3 assassin, so players shouldn’t even worry about completing the set until after said fight. They’ll want the Tsubaki Mk-III as soon as possible after that to fight Bad Girl though, a far harder foe than No More Heroes 2‘s Kimmy. And after that, players will really have to worry.
After completing the “final” boss of No More Heroes, plopping down to save in Travis’ bathroom will trigger a cutscene. If players have all the Katanas, Henry will challenge Travis to a fight. He’s no slouch, with a fight and boss theme that add up to two of the reasons No More Heroes is still worth playing. Defeat Henry, and the true ending is revealed.
No More Heroes is available on Nintendo Switch now.
