The Nintendo Switch has seen quite a few re-releases of games that debuted on the Wii U. With titles like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe selling consistently well, its no surprise that Nintendo has dug into its catalog of Wii U titles to give fans another chance at some games they might have missed.
The most recent re-release is Pikmin 3 Deluxe, a title that originally released in 2013 to fairly stellar reviews. Pikmin 3 Deluxe stars three playable characters that players will need to swap between in order to efficiently solve puzzles, collect fruit, and break down barriers.
The game starts players off with a single character, Alph. During the tutorial, Alph will come across some Pikmin that will assist him while the game teaches players the basics of Pikmin 3 Deluxe. And after a short bout of harvesting fruit and discovering the different types of Pikmin, players will soon be introduced to Brittany, one of the other playable characters. Alph will need the help of Rock Pikmin in order to save Brittany, which the game will provide for him. After Brittany has been saved, fans will now be able to switch between the two, though there is a slight catch.
If the character is in Alph’s party, players won’t be able to simply switch to their desired character. Instead, they will need to use Alph to throw his partner, similar to how Alph throws Pikmin, in order to swap between characters. Once the desired character has been thrown, players can swap to that character by holding the Y button to open up a small menu where they’ll see the face of changeable characters on the left d-pad button. Press left on the d-pad and the controlled character will change to whoever was targeted. Make sure to send some Pikmin to the new character as well so they can have a fighting chance.
While players will get a brief moment to play as Charlie, the third character, in the beginning of the game, he is quickly swallowed whole by the Vehemoth Phosbat. Players will need to defeat the Phosbat by using the Yellow Pikmin in order to save Charlie from its guts. Once all three characters are unlocked and reunited, fans will be able to swap between all three of them using the method above.
It would be nice to have a dedicated button to swapping out characters, but the omission makes sense as the Pikmin games thrive on efficiency and making sure every movement and button press is effective. By forcing the player to toss their desired character, Pikmin 3 Deluxe immediately clues the player that they’ll need to make clever use of character swapping to complete the game, especially if they’re playing on the Ultra-Spicy difficulty mode.
Pikmin 3 Deluxe is available now on Nintendo Switch.
