God of War Ragnarok Sequel May Be the PS5’s Biggest Console Seller

God of War was most on the best-selling exclusives for the PS4 when it released back in 2018. With a new console generation and a new game in the series on the way, hopes will be high among both fans and Sony’s investors.

God of War’s sequel, which will deal with Ragnarok, could be one of the best-selling PS5 exclusives and could help make the PS5 the best-selling console of the coming generation. There are a few key reasons for this, as well as some hurdles which the game may encounter along the way.

God of War 2018 released on April 20, 2018. Just three days later it had sold 3.1 million copies, and by May 2019 the game had moved 10 million units, beating God of War 3 and making it one of the best-selling PS4 games released. The last game revived the God of War series with an aging Kratos as he reckons with his actions in the first God of War trilogy and tries to raise his son Atreus. It ended with some huge cliff-hangers that will likely draw many fans who bought the 2018 title to return to the series when the sequel releases.

First, Atreus is revealed to be Loki, the Norse god of deceit. Second, the death of Baldur sets Ragnarok into motion, including three years of winter known as Fimbulwinter. The Jotunheim Mural in God of War 2018 hints that Atreus may continue the cycle of sons killing fathers in the series, with the final panel showing the boy cradling a figure who resembles a tattoo-less Kratos. Some have speculated this could also be Odin, who has also yet be seen and whose reveal will be a big drawing point for the new game, especially if the patriarch of the Norse pantheon bares any resemblance to Zeus, Kratos’ father.

The secret ending to God of War 2018 will also have many fans of the franchise wanting more. The secret ending appeared to show Thor arriving at the end of Fimbulwinter, likely to attempt to take revenge on Kratos and Atreus for the death of Baldur and of his own sons, Magni and Modi, in the last game.

The next God of War game is in a unique position. Almost all of the main events of Ragnarok have already been prophesized in the game, including Odin being eaten by Fenrir, Thor and the World Serpent killing one-another, and the razing of Midgard in flame by the giant Surtr. However, God of War has already changed some details of the Norse apocalypse, such as Magni and Modi already being dead when they are among the surviving Aesir in most accounts of the myth.

This uncertainty and the possibility of divergence from the Ragnarok prophecy could be a huge draw, fueling speculation right up until release that will make many old fans and new players alike curious about the sequel.

While God of War 2018 sold extremely well, it was not the best-selling first-party release on the PS5. Marvel’s Spider-Man gained 3.3 million sales over its first few days, just beating God of War to the top spot. Spider-Man: Miles Morales is set to help launch the PS5, and could set a new record for God of War to beat. However, the fact that the God of War sequel will be a PS5 exclusive will likely factor into many player’s choice of console this holiday season.

God of War sequel is set to release in 2021.
