PS5 Gets Price Cut in One Region | Game Rant

The PS5 price and release date were revealed a while ago now, but in Brazil that price has fluctuated. Now gamers in that region can expect to pay just a little less than before, something the PlayStation Blog in Brazil attributes to lowered taxes on gaming. The reduction isn’t drastic, but it should help the PS5 be just a bit more affordable for Brazilian gamers.

For those that aren’t aware, video games are very expensive in Brazil. The country places very heavy taxes on foreign imported electronics, requiring Sony and other electronic companies to sell their product at a much higher price in order to make a profit. The original price for the PS5 was almost double what players in other regions were paying.

For those in the US, the PS5 costs $499.99 USD, the equivalent of about R$2,830, but the retail price for the standard edition of the PS5 in Brazil used to be a staggering R$4,999, which would equate to about $883 USD. The price cut affects both the standard edition of the PS5 and the Digital Edition, as well as the DualSense controller and other accessories.

The new prices for the next gen console are as follows. The PS5 Digital Edition is down from R$4,499 ($795 USD) to R$4,199 ($742 USD), and the PS5 standard edition is reduced from R$4,999 ($883 USD) to R$4,699 ($830 USD). In terms of accessories, the DualSense controller’s price changed from R$499 ($88 USD) to R$469 ($83 USD) and the HD camera went down from R$449 ($79 USD) to R$419 ($74 USD). Obviously, these prices are still much higher than those being paid in other regions, but it’s still a welcome reprieve for Brazilian gamers.

Oddly enough, some Brazilians have speculated on whether or not it would be more cost effective to simply fly to the United States and buy a console there instead. Including tax, players are expecting to spend on average around $535 on the PS5 standard edition. That number will change a bit based on the sales tax of the state and county, but this is a good estimate. Purchasing the PS5 in the US would save Brazilian gamers about $300 in total. This may not be enough to pay for a round trip flight from Brazil, but it’s still a substantial amount of money.

For those gamers in Brazil that have already pre-ordered and paid for a PS5, Sony reassures that refunds will be given based on the difference in price. It may be a small price change overall, but any kind of price cut to the PS5 is welcome, especially in Brazil where gaming is already so expensive.

The PS5 releases November 12th/19th depending on region.
