The original Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit performed exceptionally well back in 2010, boasting mostly above 9/10 averages among most professional reviews. It’s noted for having a rewarding experience while keeping with the expected adrenaline-fueled driving entertainment that one can expect from the racing genre, with Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit awarded the title of “Best Racing Game” in the 2010 Game Critics Awards and several similar awards from other media outlets.
The franchise has been developed by many teams over the course of its history. Need for Speed Heat performed well in 2019, but for the upcoming Remastered edition of Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, the game was handed back to Criterion Games as its leading development studio.
Thankfully, fans of the 2010 hit racing game can expect Hot Pursuit to go back to its roots with not much content being changed other than graphics and overall visual quality. Players should expect content to be largely the same for a lower price than most newly released titles on the market.
As usual, many players will be looking to the graphical improvements of Hot Pursuit in their judgement, especially PC gamers. While the original was already considered excellent in terms of its graphics back in 2010, but now players can expect higher resolution models, more props, and higher frame rate targets. Players should keep in mind, however, that experiencing Hot Pursuit on the Switch or original PS4 or Xbox One as opposed to the Xbox One X or the PS4 Pro will not yield that same quality of graphics. Though this is to be expected, the enhanced consoles will target 4k gameplay, while the regular PS4 and Xbox One will target for 1080p.
Switch players will also be missing out on the additions of new particles and improved textures in the remastered edition. Because the Switch features less powerful hardware than its console competitors, there are some graphical sacrifices that will be made. Docked, Hot Pursuit will run at 1080p with 30 fps, while handheld, it will run at 720p with the same frame rate. That being said, while it’s undeniable that the overall visual quality of the game has improved, many fans watching released gameplay footage feel there’s barely a difference between the two.
Post-launch, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit featured paid and free downloadable content that included new cars, new races, and new trophies. With some of the most notable expansion packs being Racer Timesaver Pack, Armed and Dangerous, and Lamborghini Untamed, all DLC that released for the original Hot Pursuit will be included in the remastered version at launch.
Additionally, Hot Pursuit Remastered will add an extra six hours of gameplay on top of that, with more than thirty new challenges for players to enjoy. Fans can expect new achievements, wraps, and car colors along with the quality of life enhancements the complete the gameplay experience while bringing them back to the success of the 2010 title. Though specific details have not yet been shown or announced, Hot Pursuit‘s photo mode has also been revamped.
Multiplayer was a large draw for players with the original Hot Pursuit, and now they can experience Autolog in all its glory, but with some improvements. Hot Pursuit Remastered will support cross-platform play in its multiplayer, so PC, console, and Switch gamers can also experience the adrenaline together. With the game’s success back in 2010, combined with the improved graphics and packaged content, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered is ultimately a great deal. At only $39.99, players will get everything that the game amounted to ten years ago with the addition of all DLC and brand new content.
Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit will launch for PC, PS4, and Xbox One on November 6th and for the Switch on November 13th.
