GTA 5 has shipped 135m units, sales slow ahead of PS5 Xbox Series X/S launches

Rockstar’s crime blockbuster Grand Theft Auto 5 has shipped 135m units as of September, but it seems that sales are slowing down.

Speaking to investors about the three months ending September 30 – as transcribed by Seeking Alpha – the CEO and chairman of Take-Two, Strauss Zelnick, said that the game has sold in more than 135m units since its launch back in September 2013.

That’s a huge milestone for any game, but it does seem that sales for the crime romp are slowing down a bit. In the previous quarter – the three months ending June – Zelnick told investors that it had sold in “nearly 135m units.”

In recent years, Take-Two has generally been shipping between five and ten million units of Grand Theft Auto 5 each quarter, so to see the title go from ‘just under 135m” to “over 135m units” in three months indicates something of a slow down.

Grand Theft Auto 5 is coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in the second half of 2021. Some might think that the game’s forthcoming leap to the next-generation of hardware might be the result of sales dipping for the crime blockbuster, but anyone who is going to buy a PS5 this early on probably has already bought GTA 5 at some point already.

As of September 2020, Red Dead Redemption 2 has shipped more than 34m units worldwide, an increase on the 32m that Take-Two reported in June.

Grand Theft Auto 5 might have sold in a huge 135m units around the world in seven years, which is hugely impressive, but – as far as we know – it hasn’t ever had its own branded wine unlike Grand Theft Auto 2.
