The Suicide Squad’s Mission Takes Them to a Classic DC Location

Some plot details on James Gunn’s upcoming DC Extended Universe (DCEU) film The Suicide Squad have been revealed. The squad’s sentence-reducing mission will see them traveling to a location long time fans of DC and the original comic should recognize.

In an interview with Empire Magazine, Gunn and producer Peter Safran revealed that the squad are being sent to the fictional Latin-American island Corto Maltese, first seen in Frank Miller’s seminal Batman series The Dark Knight Returns.  Safran added “there they have to destroy a Nazi-era prison and laboratory named Jotunheim, where political prisoners were held and experimentations took place.”

Jotunheim, first appearing back in the very first issue of Suicide Squad, was built by the Nazis during World War II. Its name refers to the land of the Jötnar, giant entities from Norse mythology, and its laboratories were used to develop new superhumans. In the original comic, Jotunheim was located in the fictional Middle East nation Quarac.

James Gunn has talked before about how his take on Suicide Squad is more a sequel to the original series by John Ostrander which ran from 1987 to 1992, than the 2016 DCEU movie. And having these specific locations feature in his film should really please DC fans.

Previously Gunn had also revealed that there would be some big surprise deaths in store. Asking his Twitter followers who they expect to last through to the ending credits, one fan @dapperjabber replied “Harley Quinn has franchise armor. Pretty sure King Shark and Amanda Waller also have ‘DC has them in other things’ protection.” Gunn replied “No character was protected by DC. They gave me carte blanche to do what I wanted. That was one of the things we agreed to before I came to work for them. I wasn’t looking for shock value but I wanted the audience to know anything could happen. #StoryReignsSupreme.”

The Suicide Squad is set for release in Aug 2021.
