Despite being less in the spotlight than its console counterparts, Call of Duty Mobile is an important game for many. Pre-registration for it exceeded 50 million in China alone, proving many players want their Call of Duty fix on the go.
While serving as a good mobile representation of the standard Call of Duty formula, Call of Duty Mobile has also inherited some less palatable features. For example, loot in the series that takes the form of fancier gun and character skins are received through crates. These are often purchased through COD points (bought with real money), and what players get from them is determined by random chance. Call of Duty Mobile‘s newest gun skin, its first Mythic weapon, is drawing ire from players for how it interacts with this system.
The Mythic skin for the Fennec, called the Fennec – Ascended, is the very first Mythic skin in the game. This adds a sixth rarity to the game, placing it above Legendary, the previous rarest variety of item. Players can roll to acquire it, with the price starting at 30 COD points and increasing drastically with each roll. Considering what players pay to spin wheels like this, it’s no surprise that things like this cosmetic have led Call of Duty Mobile to break revenue milestones. What has players so furious however, is the fact that just getting the skin once doesn’t actually give the entire Mythic cosmetic.
Once the Mythic Fennec is unlocked through the above mentioned spin, players must spend COD points on an entirely separate lucky spin. This allows players to acquire the perks that actually make the Fennec Mythic, like a unique death animation and Mythic attachments. It was not specified by Activision that the Mythic had to be completed this way, and players are complaining about the massive amount of money they have spent on the gun. When the Mythic weapon’s release date was announced, players thought they would be able to get the gun once and be done with it.
What’s worse is that this is not some random gun that the skin was given to. The Fennec is a gun of some renown in Call of Duty Mobile, for good and bad reasons. This is a gun players definitely want a Mythic skin for, and it looks like Activision structured the way to get the full Mythic loadout knowing that.
This is only the first Mythic skin in the game and others may be handled better. Hopefully, when some of the other best guns in Call of Duty Mobile get Mythic skins, they will be attainable without spending a ton of money.
Call of Duty Mobile is available for Mobile devices.
