Mass Effect: Legendary Edition Announced, Remasters the Original Trilogy

While it was originally leaked months ago, BioWare has now officially announced Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, which remasters the original three Mass Effect games for modern audiences. Mass Effect: Legendary Edition will upgrade Mass Effect 12, and 3 to support up to 4K resolution, with improved frame rates and textures, as well as upgraded character models, shaders, and effects to ensure the best-possible visual experience.

Additionally, Mass Effect: Legendary Edition will also include all of the single-player DLC and promotional items that were released for the original games. No mention was made regarding Mass Effect 3‘s multiplayer mode, but it would be surprising to see it in the Legendary Edition. Regardless, Mass Effect: Legendary Edition should be the definitive way to experience the trilogy, as it will allow players to experience the BioWare’s epic science-fiction story in its entirety. Anyone excited to revisit the classic games should note that Mass Effect: Legendary Edition will launch spring 2021.

As far as Mass Effect: Legendary Edition platforms go, the collection is so far only confirmed for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. With both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X launching next week, it seems a bit odd that BioWare has left those consoles out of the loop. However, the PS5 and Xbox Series X are both backward compatible with PS4 and Xbox One games, so Mass Effect: Legendary Edition will still be playable on the new hardware. And while BioWare didn’t provide specifics, it’s been confirmed that playing Mass Effect: Legendary Edition on PS5 and Xbox Series X will come with some additional enhancements. Whether or not an official next-gen version ever materializes remains to be seen, however.

The Mass Effect: Legendary Edition reveal isn’t the only way BioWare is celebrating N7 Day this year. It also confirmed that a new Mass Effect game is in active development, being worked on by some members of the original team. Not only that, but the Mass Effect cast will reunite for a special presentation later today. Hardcore Mass Effect series fans should be sure to tune in, just in case there are some extra surprises in store.

Between the Mass Effect cast reunion special and the Legendary Edition announcement, fans of the sci-fi RPG franchise should be able to celebrate this year’s N7 Day in style. The new Mass Effect game in development is exciting as well, though with BioWare busy with Dragon Age 4 and fixing Anthem, it will likely be some time before it ever sees the light of day.
