Everything You Need to Know Before Buying Godfall | Game Rant

Originally revealed at the 2019 Game Awards, Godfall has been an intriguing game for many fans largely due to it being a self described looter slasher game. Part of that mystery centered around what the game actually was, as numerous trailers during the first part of 2020 seemingly struggled to convey what it was like to play Godfall, especially what players would be doing once the main story missions came to an end.

As a loot based game, fans were hopeful that Godfall wouldn’t fall into the same traps as other games in this genre that struggled out of the gate including Anthem and more recently, Marvel’s Avengers. However, as the release date continues to approach, developer Counterplay Games has been much more open about the experience, showing off not only lengthier bits of gameplay, but also the game’s overarching story, as well as end game content that hopes to keep the fanbase engaged long after release.

Counterplay Games has seemingly been making up for lost time by releasing a ton of new details regarding the game in advance of its impending release date. Here’s everything players need to know before buying Godfall.

Described as a looter slasher by Counterplay Games, Godfall mixes the familiar gameplay loops from franchises like Borderlands or Destiny by collecting loot to get stronger by using a variety of abilities and weapons. Unlike those games, which typically force player to select a specific class to play as, Godfall instead introduces the concept of Valorplates, Zodiac inspired legendary armor sets that largely act as the game’s class system. Players are able to swap between them at will as long as they have previously unlocked it. In addition to Valorplates and loot, players will also be chasing weapons across five different classes: twin blades, polearm, longsword, two handed war hammer and the two handed great sword.

Players step into the armor of the last of the Valorian Knights, charged with taking down a former ally known as Macros before they can kick start the apocalypse. Set in a high fantasy setting, players will be fighting across four different realms, each set in a specific element: Water, Air, Earth, and Fire. Counterplay has previously mentioned that the game was inspired by other works of fiction like Brandon Sanderson’s book, The Stormlight Archive as well as Isaac Asimov’s Foundation.

A third-person action game that runs Unreal Engine 4, Godfall focuses purely on melee combat, taking inspiration from games like Monster Hunter. During combat, players can target enemy weak points for added damage and opening up opportunities for stylish finisher moves.

Over the course of the campaign, players will unlock 12 Valorplates, each with their own special abilities fitting certain playstyles. While individual pieces can’t be swapped out, players have a few options for customizing the loadout by changing the color, adding different gear like amulets, rings, augments or charms, equipping a banner, and a lifestone. Two different weapon sets can be equipped at any given time and players will continually discover loot divided into different rarity tiers. Counterplay Games has attempted to make Godfall into the “Tinkerer’s Dream” letting players get as detailed as they want with loot and min-maxing stats.

While Godfall does not have any PvP style elements, the game can be played solo or in a small team. It supports drop-in, drop-out matchmaking and the loot is instanced, which means each player will see their own loot and won’t have to fight over a drop with the other players.

One the story is complete, players will have other missions they can play through such as hunts, boss runs, and more as they approach the level cap of 50. For the end game, Counterplay Games recently revealed a couple of activities to keep the player invested and coming back. The first is the Ascendant Tower of Trials, which aims to be highly replayable by adding in a few roguelike elements and providing a challenge for even the most skilled players. These combat trials ramp up in difficulty the higher a player goes up a massive and infinte tower, with pathways that offer different loot as rewards.

In addition to the tower, Godfall also features an alternative reality game mode centered around the idea of Dream Stones. Essentially, each Dream Stone that is collected mirrors one of the four realms players have experienced before. However, players will be facing three separate rounds of enemies that have been modified and defeating them gives the player new buffs and loot. Failing a round isn’t game over, but will make the next round a bit more difficult. Ultimately, once the three rounds have been completed, the final round is against the final boss who again has been given a different moveset and is more difficult then the first encounter during the story.

Godfall is a next-gen only title, meaning it won’t be appearing on the PS4 or Xbox One. While it’s listed as a PS5 and PC only title, it has recently been discovered that it’s only a timed PS5 exclusive and will be hitting other platforms, presumably the Xbox Series X/S, sometime May 2021.

One of the more surprising elements to Godfall, especially early on when not a lot was yet known about the title, came when Counterplay Games confirmed the PlayStation 5 price tag at $70. Fans now know that this appears to be a next-gen trend for many games, but at the time it left people feeling a little upset. Alternatively, the PC version of the game remains locked in at the normal $60 price point.

Fans still have a few days left to pre-order, which will net them a bunch of digital goodies for the game. These include a chrome skin option for the Silvermane, Phoenix, and Greyhawk Valorplates, a selection of early augments, amulets and rings, and Zer0’s Sword, which is a crossover item from Borderlands 2. PlayStation players who preorder from the PlayStation Store also receive a Red skin for the Typhon Valorplate while Epic Games Store pre-orders get a yellow version instead.

As expected, there are multiple versions of Godfall for players to check out, each containing more content at a slightly higher cost.

Digital Deluxe Edition

Comes with the base game and all pre-order bonus content listed above. The big feature for this version of the game is that it also comes with the first expansion, which is due out sometime in 2021. PS5 players can grab this edition for $90 while the Epic Games Store version is ten dollars cheaper at $80.

Ascended Edition

The biggest version of Godfall is the Ascended Edition. Along with the base game, pre-order bonuses, and the first expansion, it comes with even more digital content for players. This package includes a ton of golden items to help players stand out including skins for Silvermane, Phoenix, and Greyhawk. Players will also get Golden weapon skins for each of the five weapon classes, a gold shield and royal banner skin, an orange valorplate skin for Vertigo, and a unique multiplayer lobby title.

Again, the PS5 version of this bundle is slightly more expensive at $100 compared to the PC version at only $90.

Godfall launches November 12 for PC and PS5.
