Releasing later this week, the PlayStation 5 will be one of the largest gaming consoles out there. However, a recent interview revealed that the PS5’s final size could’ve been much bigger than it currently is.
According to an interview with The Washington Post, Yujin Morisawa, Sony’s senior art director, said that the PS5 was originally designed to be bigger to meet its power needs. He would later make it smaller so that it wasn’t too big to handle. Morisawa shared some behind the scene details about the PS5, providing insight into the approach he took with designing the console and explains why it is so big and how it was almost bigger.
Morisawa said he was initially uncertain of the final shape when he was first designing the next-gen PS5. He knew the console would be large due to the sheer power it will be using and understood it required a heat sink to provide optimal air flow. So, Morisawa made it much bigger in order to accommodate the necessary cooling air it would need to function. To his surprise, the engineering team told him that his designs were actually too big.
Morisawa had to shrink down the design a bit, while maintaining enough airflow for the PS5. He worked with engineering in order to fine-tune the console’s design and maximize the interior space. In the end, the team had to decide either to make the PS5 similar to past PlayStation consoles or go for something “beyond,” and it went with the latter.
When asked about the design aesthetic, Morisawa said he looked at it like jumping into a world of “five dimensions” in order to better expand the experience players can have with the PS5. He explained that he wanted to simplify the console’s design, which is why the PS5 DualSense controller doesn’t have the iconic color combination and only have one color tone. Morisawa would expand on this saying he talked with the designers on how they should be designing everything on the console including the color, texture, and other small details.
Ultimately, the hardware and airflow had originally dictated that the PS5 would be large, and the aesthetic choices would later contribute to the final design. Surprisingly, when asked how he felt about the initial reactions to the console’s reveal, Morisawa said it was hilarious. He was glad that people poked fun at the PS5 and found new ways to enjoy its final design. Soon players will be able to enjoy the PS5 as intended later this week.
The PlayStation 5 releases on November 12.
