Sony has gotten another celebrity to promote the PS5’s release date. This time, tennis star Naomi Osaka was given early access to Sony’s latest console. The video, released today, featured Osaka talking about her relationship with gaming, before getting to play some of Resident Evil Village ahead of its 2021 release.
In the same living room set as the one actor Michael B. Jordan played the PS5 in, Osaka revealed how she would play video games in-between tennis practice and matches to de-stress, especially during the tournaments of the WTA Tour. The Japanese tennis player also spoke of her affinity for MMORPGs, Apex Legends, and Overwatch.
Osaka got to play some next-gen games, like Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Resident Evil Village, which will release in 2021. Despite her own admission of her dislike for horror games, Osaka seemed to be in good spirits when navigating through the desolate village. Osaka also noted of how the latest entry in the Resident Evil series will utilize the haptic feedback hardware in the PS5’s DualSense controller.
Sony has gotten a whole host of celebrities to promote the PS5, including soccer star Robert Lewandowski and rapper Travis Scott. Scott, real name Jacques Webster, is perhaps the most noted of the lineup, having been enlisted by Sony as a “strategic creative partner.” The Houston rapper has been involved in two PS5 advertisements so far, one as a narrator and the other in Sony’s take on the “Blown Away Guy” Maxell ads featuring a new colorway of the Nike SB Dunk Lows.
While the PS5’s hyped launch is set to surpass that of the PS4’s, expectations should be tempered for the PS5’s online-only launch day designed to ensure the health and safety of purchasers, retailers, and the wider community. Those who have pre-ordered will have nothing to worry about, since their order will either be delivered or can be picked up in-store. For those who are looking to purchase on launch day, they will have to compete against bots in the online store of their chosen retailer.
As for Naomi Osaka, 2020 has been an unusual year for her as it has been for most. The Japanese tennis player was initially on the WTA Tour, but was forced to take a hiatus period as the tour was suspended due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. However, Osaka ultimately returned from the mandated break to win her second US Open title over Victoria Azarenka, coming back from a set down.
The PlayStation 5 will release in North America and select countries on November 12 and on November 19 for the rest of the world.
