Though nothing is confirmed, it seems like another Spyro game is on the way sometime in the near future. With the massive success of the Spyro Reignited Trilogy, as well as the fact that Crash Bandicoot just recently received a new sequel in the form of Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time, a new Spyro game now seems all but inevitable. The success of the recent new entry in the Crash series shows that a new Spyro game may be very likely to come next, as both Spyro and Crash tend to follow a similar path.
With Crash Bandicoot 4 came plenty of new and returning characters, from classics like Dingodile and Tiny to lesser known ones like N. Trance appearing. This brings up the conversation of whether the next Spyro game will also bring back some of the series’ old characters, and if so, which ones should make a return with the new title.

First appearing in Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage, Hunter the Cheetah is Spyro’s closest ally apart from Sparx the Dragonfly, and has remained a series mainstay since his introduction. It would feel weird to experience a new game in the Spyro series without the inclusion of Hunter in some form. He in many ways adds to the what makes the Spyro franchise so great: he acts as Spyro’s pal and ally, lending him tips, guidance, to the point he feels like a necessary inclusion.
Like Hunter, the character of Money Bags adds quite a bit of personality to the Spyro games, and seeing a new entry that lacks him would just feel odd. Money Bags not only feels like a necessary element to the games, but acts like one of the main obstacles that Spyro must face throughout his adventures. Acting as the toll man, Money Bags’ greed over Spyro’s gems make for the primary reason for collecting it in the first place and helps to balance the collect-a-thon overall.
Though he’s not necessarily a crucial character to the series, Sgt. Bird is a fan favorite and perhaps one of the most fun side characters to play as in all of the Spyro games. First introduced as a new playable character in Spyro: Year of the Dragon, Sgt. Bird later returned as playable for both Spyro: A Hero’s Tail and Spyro: Attack of the Rhynocs, making him the biggest recurring playable character in the series outside of Sparx and Spyro himself. It’s understandable, as the military penguin is both hilarious and incredibly cute, as well as quite fun to play as. Seeing Sgt. Bird return yet again, whether it be playable or not, would be fantastic and surely satisfy plenty of old fans of the series.
Bianca stands out as one of the most interesting NPCs throughout the Spyro series. She arguably has the strongest character arc, going from the naive Sorceress’ apprentice to one of Spyro’s closest allies. First introduced in Year of the Dragon, Bianca went on to return for several sequels including Enter the Dragonfly as well as the handheld titles as one of Spyro’s guides. Because of her magical abilities, Bianca’s character has a lot of interesting potential, and seems like a great NPC to bring back.
Ripto is by far and large the most interesting and entertaining of all of Spyro’s foes. He’s returned more times than any other villain in the series, has arguably the best final boss fight in Spyro and is considered by many to be the main villain of the franchise, so his return seems the most logical. Even if he doesn’t return as the main villain for the next Spyro game, any sort of appearance by Ripto would be welcome, even if its as a new playable character or side character, similar to how Crash 4 brought back some of the series’ past villains.
While there have been plenty of characters introduced throughout the Spyro series, some certainly feel more likely to return than others. Though these picks are just guesses, so fans may end up being surprised with which characters Activision ends up bringing back for the next Spyro entry.
