The original Xbox launched on November 15, 2001, and now, the Xbox Series X/S is available to retailers practically everywhere. Just shy of the 19 year mark, Microsoft has made its fourth iteration of the console available to consumers. The OG Xbox, the Xbox 360, and the Xbox One have all built upon each other, with the Xbox Series X continuing that iteration with innovation in mind.
Many may recall the days of Halo on the original, how the Xbox 360 elevated the platform and came out strong over its primary competitor, the PS3, and how the launch of the Xbox One put the platform down this past generation. Since its early guffaws, the Xbox One has grown its games and services, with Microsoft acquiring several studios in the past few years, building new iterations with the One S and One X, and offered new premium services like Game Pass.
What seems clear moving into this new console generation is that it won’t be decided over night. Demands for PS5 and Xbox Series X are high, and while arguments for exclusives remain, the next couple of years could see that argument decline. With games like Avowed, Fable, and more coming to the Series X, it seems likely that 2021 or 2022 will be the real test for these consoles.
In the here and now, there’s a lot of reason to celebrate. It’s the first day of a new generation, and Xbox fans who have secured one may be hooking it up and saying farewell to their One, One S, or One X. Quick Resume, Game Pass, and more are available day one, even if there are reasons to wait. Nonetheless, some fans may want to consider the basics when they have this new console in hand:
- Has their order been confirmed? is it our for delivery? when can it be picked up? Has the pre-order been verified and money be withdrawn, or are they like some unfortunate Amazon customers who have their Xbox Series X order delayed until December 31, 2020, or later.
- If in that boat, should they just wait? or can they get another elsewhere? Retailers are listing some consoles available for Black Friday, while Walmart has new Xbox Series X pre-orders being made available every 3 hours or so today.
- Which games should they get at launch? which games should they be keeping an eye on releasing over the next few months?
- Do they need an extra controller? new accessories? Are their TVs up to snuff?
- Ultimately, if unable to get one today, when and where are their best chances? All major retailers have flickering and fluctuating stock, so if not today, Black Friday may be another chance. However, it should be noted that Head of Xbox Phil Spencer has already apologizes for Xbox Series X shortages due to its demand.
Ultimately, launch day is upon us, which boils down to a few necessary statements: congratulations, Microsoft. Congratulations, Xbox fans. Have fun gaming!
