There’s no denying that Among Us is one of the most popular games of the year. Its sudden, but welcome, boost in popularity led to developer InnerSloth to cancel the sequel and shift focus towards updating the original game instead. The latest update even came with a roadmap showing what new content can be expected in the future, including a brand-new map and an account system.
It’s not just InnerSloth, though. Even fans have been coming up with new ways to play the game, recreating it in Unreal 4, VR, and even Rocket League, or making custom-made skins to help players stand out.
Now, it’s been reported that a fan-mod is in development that can fundamentally change how Among Us is played, because it lets players communicate mid-game. Usually, when people get together to play a match, players can only talk with one another once a meeting is called to discuss who the imposter could be and who to vote for.
A mod that can potentially let two imposters coordinate with each other sounds unbalanced, but this chat mod is being designed to be proximity-based. What that means is that players can only talk with one another if their characters are near each other.
This can allow crewmates to share information mid-match, which can speed up the voting process, and while imposters can better coordinate, splitting up to perform double-kills to better cover their tracks and avoid suspicion, it runs the risk of needing to be near each other. If two imposters are standing in the same room talking with each other, it could only raise suspicion if they’re spotted or overheard by a passing crewmember.
At the time of writing, the mod is still in development and is only available to select content creators, so it may be a while before it becomes widely available. The mod could potentially breathe some new life into the game for those who may want a new way to experience it and it’s ultimately optional, so those who think such a mod will only take away what makes Among Us fun can simply ignore it,
It’s not like the game necessarily needs reinvigorating. Its popularity appears to have barely waivered since its release, with the mobile version being the most downloaded mobile game in October.
Among Us has even caught the attention of politicians like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who streamed a play session on Twitch alongside various content creators to encourage people to vote in the then-upcoming US presidential election.
Among Us is available on Android, iOS, and PC.
