LGBTQ+ Wrestling Documentary ‘Out in the Ring’ Releases First Trailer

Here in 2020, it seems like everybody loves a good documentary. From Tiger King to The Way I See It, audiences have been lapping up every true story tossed their way. So how about another one? This time, the focus is on LGBTQ+ professional wrestlers, and that premise alone should be enough to turn more than a few heads.

Out in the Ring, which recently launched its second crowdfunding campaign as production continued, also dropped a trailer to commemorate the campaign and entice potential backers. The trailer teases the wide reach of the documentary, showing footage spanning practically as many decades as professional wrestling has existed as well as plenty of interviews with performers who finally get a much deserved spotlight, along with others in the industry.

The documentary, produced by Ry Levey, hopes to shine light on the often overlooked but always important LGBTQ+ wrestlers in the business. Out in the Ring hopes to uncover “the unique history of the industry and the rise of visibility for performers and fans around the world.” Featuring tons of interviews with current stars such as AEW‘s Sonny Kiss and Diamante alongside plenty of other wrestlers, industry insiders, and historians, the filmmakers clearly put a lot of passion and effort into the project.

Some who aren’t particularly familiar with professional wrestling outside of the typical Monday Night Raw-type showcases may not have expected the LGBTQ+ community to have such a substantial presence in the sport, especially for as long as they have. But after taking a deeper look into the industry and checking out smaller, more local wrestling organizations, it’s clear just how much work is put into the theatrics and behind the scenes aspects of the whole deal. With such a deceptively nuanced approach, it’s only natural that something that seems very one-note on the surface would, in fact, attract a diverse group of wrestlers.

Out in the Ring almost seems like the next logical step, considering how the wrestling industry’s more subtle aspects have been bubbling to the surface with the rise of the aforementioned smaller organizations as well as shows like GLOW which did a lot to destigmatize the “manly man” image that wrestling tends to invoke among certain audiences. Wrestling is a performance medium. True, it’s unlike any other, but that’s all the more reason why those who rarely see the limelight should get this chance to be seen.

So if this piqued anyone’s interest, head on over to Out in the Ring‘s GoGetFunding page to give it some support. The documentary is currently hoping to complete production in spring of 2021, with its initial release set shortly after.
