The highly-anticipated PS5 releases today in several parts of the world, while locations like the UK, Europe, and more have to wait until November 19. Many will be traveling to stores in a matter of hours to pick their new console up, many more will be waiting for their PS5 package to arrive, and just as many if not even more will be attempting to find on online today. Walmart will have PS5 pre-orders opening every 3 hours roughly today, starting at midday, so fans may want to get on top of that.
Nonetheless, while the growing pains of a new console generation can be felt in the supply and stock o the consoles, today is a day worth celebrating. The PS5 is entering homes the world over as, well as the name implies, the fifth-generation PlayStation console.
Many may recall the golden days of the PS1 and PS2 era, with the latter really helping cementing PlayStation as a household name. Of course, Sony got a little too bold with the PS3 (originally priced at $599), which allowed Microsoft in turn to dominate that generation with the Xbox 360. It was Microsoft’s turn to mess up the messaging at launch of the Xbox One, which allowed Sony’s PS4 to dominate the past generation. Now, with the Xbox Series X and the PS5, better more game-focused marketing on both sides, and no serious guffaws at the start of it, it’s unclear which game console will come out on top.
That’s the thing, though: while one is likely to do so, it won’t be determined over night and that’s better for everyone involved. The PS5, for example, is the boldest design of a PlayStation console yet, but continues the dominating strategy of the PS4: premium games on a premium console. And for many fans, that’s all that’s really necessary. Titles like Bugsnax have been enrapturing reviews, while Spider-Man: Miles Morales manages to make a splash. Godfall reviews are on the lower end of the spectrum, but the messaging remains: games, games, games.
With that in mind and as many dive into their beautiful PS5 console today, there’s really one one thing to say: Congratulations, Sony. Congratulations, PlayStation fans. Happy gaming, everyone!
The PS5 is releasing today in US, Canada, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, and Singapore. PS5 releases in UK, Europe, and other parts of the world on November 19.
