The PlayStation 5 boasts many new features, from ray-tracing technology to incredible load times, but it lacks a web browser. However, there is a workaround for getting onto the internet and browsing various sites on the PS5, though hopeful players will have to do a bit of work.
This discovery comes courtesy of Arstechnica, and it seems as if a backdoor login via Twitter has become the most effective way to get onto the internet via a PS5. With the PS5 isn’t getting a web browser anytime soon, this will have to do for those desperate to get online. Players should be warned that the bootleg browser has its limitations, however.
The first step of the process is opening the User’s Guide on the PlayStation 5, which takes players to a live website via a link. While the User’s Guide works as a detailed FAQ on the PS5 and how to operate the system, players will want to jump from this linked page to Twitter via a logo in the corner. This allows players to log in to the social media platform, and from there, the option to explore the internet becomes wide open.
While players can still not enter URLs, they can track them down via Twitter posts and Twitter bios, unlocking access to whatever site they can find on the platform. If someone posts the video of a YouTuber’s PS5 already being dead, for example, it can be watched via the link posted on Twitter. It is worth noting, however, that not every website will function properly through the secret browser, as a fair number of websites struggle to run on the PlayStation 5.
Arstechnica reported that the massively popular streaming website Twitch does work on the PS5’s hidden “browser,” with YouTube and Vimeo also functioning as normal. Web-based games were hard to control, however, with emulated software failing entirely. Beyond that, Google Docs also failed, as well as any website that incorporates Flash. It seems like players will only be able to access websites made purely using Javascript or HTML, a major limitation for this newfound workaround.
Still, for players desperate to explore the internet on their next-gen Sony console, this workaround will have to do. Even with the lack of a true web browser, though, the PlayStation 5 has been highly praised by critics and should please most adopters once they start to play games on the system.
