Mortal Kombat film reboot delayed indefinitely

It’s going to be some time before the new Mortal Kombat movie is in kinemas.

The upcoming reboot of the Mortal Kombat film franchise has been delayed.

The news has come via producer Todd Garner, who replied to a fan asking about the movie’s release date on Twitter – as spotted by GamesRadar – saying that there was no word on a release date for either a trailer or the finished product.

“We’d always planned for it and thought we’d do it in March,” Garner wrote.

“The pandemic had other plans. We won’t have a release date for the movie until theatres re-open. Same for trailer.”

This is due to the coronavirus pandemic, of course, which has seen cinemas closing their doors to stop the spread of the virus. Garner said that both he and the cast had hoped to have the film out by March, but that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore.

Word that the Mortal Kombat movie reboot was actually happening broke in May 2019, with the film aiming for a March 5, 2021 release date. The production was set to have an R rating, meaning that it would likely be every bit as gory as the games on which it is based.

The film industry has been hard hit by the pandemic. Cinemas opened their doors in August for the release of Christopher Nolan’s latest film, Tenet, but little else has come out during 2020. News that new James Bond movie No Time To Die was being delayed once again saw a number of cinemas temporarily close their doors until the pandemic is over or under control.

In October, a new version of Mortal Kombat 11 featuring all of the game’s DLC and extra content was announced. Dubbed Mortal Kombat 11: Ultimate Edition, it’s due out on November 17.
