Demon’s Souls: What is Character Tendency? | Game Rant

With the PlayStation 5 now available in some regions, players are finally able to experience many of the new console’s first party launch games like Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Sackboy: A Big Adventure. For many players though, the big draw comes from BluePoint Games and its complete overhaul of the fan favorite PS3 title, Demon’s Souls. The game’s visuals have been completely redone, giving the game a fresh look and feel even if the gameplay has largely been left alone.

Similar to most Souls games, Demon’s Souls features more than a few things that are left a bit ambiguous. Traditionally, this leaves the responsibility of figuring out what certain items, features, or settings do up to the player or community. While Demon’s Souls is a remake and not an entirely new experience, newer players may struggle initially as they attempt to understand and learn the mechanics of the game.

Initially, one of the more confusing aspects to Demon’s Souls for some players is the Tendency mechanic as it can really have an impact on the overall experience for players. Knowing what it is and the various changes it can have based on how the player sets it are very important.

For Demon’s Souls, Character Tendency is an automatically adjusting setting that has gameplay implications for the player. Essentially, the meter will immediately fluctuate based on the player’s actions while playing and unlike World Tendency, can adjust on the fly without having to first go back to the hub area, The Nexus. Players can get a sense as to what their alignment is by viewing the eye icon in the upper left portion of the screen and its current color. Alternatively, players can access the Tendency option from the pause menu or view a bigger eye icon from the character screen.

Based on where Character Tendency is, it’ll have a small impact to the players health and damage output. In addition, the current alignment will also cause a few unique gameplay elements to occur.

For players who have Pure White Character Tendency, they receive small health and damage boosts while in Soul Form. In addition, it also increases the damage dealt to enemies when summoned to help another player as their Blue Phantom.

Outside of slight character boosts, being Pure White also allows the player to acquire the Friend’s Ring from the Monumental on the upper floor of The Nexus. As long as players answered “Yes” to his initial question at the start of the game, speaking with him with Pure White Character Tendency will unlock the ring. The Friend’s Ring will further assist players who are summoned as a Blue Phantom by increasing damage done to enemies as long as it is equipped.

Essentially the exact opposite of characters with Pure White Tendency. Maximum hit points will in Soul Form are decreased and damage done whether in Soul Form or as a Blue Phantom are gone as well. For players that enjoy invading other players, they’ll see a rise in damage output as a Black Phantom.

However, Black Tendency also unlocks a few items similar to the Pure White Tendency path. On the second floor of The Nexus, players will find a woman named Mephistopheles while having Pure Black Tendency. She’ll offer a side quest that has players killing various NPCs around the game and for each one killed, the player will earn various items including a ring that further boosts Black Phantom attack damage.

Players are not locked into a particular Tendency path while playing and can do things that will change their current standing. For players that want to move the needle back towards Pure White, they’ll need to defeat a Black Phantom player or defeat one of the unique NPC Black Phantoms that roam around the Pure Black World Tendency. Defeating all five NPC phantoms will max out the Pure White Character Tendency meter.

For players that want to steer more towards Pure Black, they’ll need to invade and defeat a player as a Black Phantom. In addition, killing a harmless NPC will shift the meter towards Black Tendency. Naturally, this makes going to Black Character Tendency much easier as the requirements are much lower than it is to attempt to get back to Pure White.

Demon’s Souls is available now for the PS5.
