Spider-Man Remastered is a gorgeous recreation of the 2018 game, adding in ray-tracing, improved lighting, DualSense functionality, and many other technical improvements. Spider-Man Remastered also keeps the original game’s many easter eggs intact, even including a new nod to one of the scariest (and funniest) fan discoveries.
While some players found awesome Ant-Man easter eggs in Spider-Man, others made a shocking discovery when looking outside the open world map of the game via photo mode. Pushing the camera extremely far away from the in-game action, players reached a group of NPCs sitting on a boat — only to discover how terrifying and unfinished they looked.
While Spider-Man on PS4 was a very impressive game visually, it was limited in certain areas by the tech of the time. Beyond that, Insomniac likely thought nobody would bother to look closely at a random boat in the ocean, but the developers were wrong. Fans quickly discovered the half-rendered monstrosities inhabiting the boat, with their pointy, misshapen heads being both a horrifying sight and a great meme for Insomniac and its fans. Even though Spider-Man Remastered brings new features that could likely fully render the boat people, Insomniac has intentionally left them untouched in the updated game.
Well, mostly untouched. The boat people look as disgusting as before even with the game’s improved lighting, but this time, they are sporting a yellow sticky note inserted by a member of the Insomniac development team. The message contains an extremely fun nod to those who visited the original boat people and reads “Did You Miss Us?” While a few people have been acting like Peter Parker’s new face is something to be concerned about, these boat people are a good reminder that there is far worse out there.
The easter egg seems to stop at the sticky note, however, as there is no trigger found thus far that allows players to interact with the NPCs. None of the new Spider-Man Remastered trophies are unlocked by visiting them either, with Insomniac leaving the boat people as a quick easter egg for only the most dedicated webslingers. Still, it is nice to see a developer interacting with fans over a random meme, and those who first found the boat people should be thrilled by the fun nod.
As of now, the unfinished boat people have not been discovered in the heavily praised Spider-Man: Miles Morales. That absence may be for the best, though, as this Spider-Man Remastered easter egg is as creepy as it is silly.
Spider-Man Remastered is available now on PlayStation 5.
