Pokemon GO Mega Energy and Mega Candy Changes Are Live

Pokemon GO trainers gained the exciting ability to use Mega Evolutions for select Pokemon in the mobile AR game earlier this fall, but the new feature wasn’t met without criticism. Although the powerful new evolutions are shaking up the PvE metagame in an interesting and dynamic way, the grind and cost of the resources required to mega evolve left some players feeling a little locked out of the fun. Luckily, Niantic responded to the criticism quickly and announced some changes that would arrive for the system in November.

Fast forward a few weeks and it is now time for the updates to arrive. The revised Mega system makes some changes to Mega Energy and Mega Candy costs and adds some alternative ways for trainers to obtain the key resources. The new system should help cut down on the cost of actually being able to put Mega Evolved Pokemon to use in Pokemon GO Battle Raids when they are needed for players who are willing to put in the work.

Obviously it is still now going to be easy or quick to earn the resources needed for a Mega Evolution and the evolution is still going to be temporary. That said, these improvements are a welcome change and it will be interesting to see if they result in more Mega Evolved Pokemon showing up in Battle Raids to help take down Legendary Raid Bosses in the game.

Earn Mega Energy by walking with your Buddy Pokémon if you have previously Mega Evolved a Pokémon in your Buddy Pokémon’s Evolutionary line. – “Mega evolutions that cost 200 energy initially, such as the Kanto starters and Gengar, will earn 15 mega energy per 3km walked as a buddy. Megas that cost 100 initially and 20 sunsequently, or Beedrill and Pidgeot, will earn 5 energy every kilometre walked.”

Earn additional Candies when you have an active Mega-Evolved Pokémon and you catch a Pokémon that shares a type with your Mega-Evolved Pokémon. You will also earn additional Candies when catching a Raid Boss, regardless of its type. – Earn 1 Candy for each wild Pokémon of the same type as your mega evolution, or any Pokémon that’s caught from a raid

See Trainers on your friend list who currently have a Mega-Evolved Pokémon.

Walking with a Pokemon that has previously been Mega Evolved seems like a great way to stock up on Energy. At about 5 Energy per KM, that’s going to take a while to add up, but it’s definitely better than nothing and offers a free way to rack up the valuable resource for players who are running low.

For now, Pokemon GO trainers should be able to head out into the world (or play from home) and continue catching the best Unova Pokemon in the game and getting closer to that complete Pokedex. Check back for more Pokemon GO updates closer to the event. Until then, good luck out there, trainers!

Pokemon GO is available now in select regions on Android and iOS devices.
