The newly released PlayStation 5 has plenty of new features to entice fans old and new to purchase the new console, if they can find one. Among those, one of the most popular and welcomed features is the backwards compatibility with nearly 4000+ PlayStation 4 titles.
Though not every PS4 title will be able to be played on the PS5, like Hideo Kojima and Guillermo del Toro’s PT, and a handful of other titles. However, most games will be playable in their original state, or in some cases, an upgraded version.
Previous owners of the PlayStation 4 are certainly going to want to transfer their save data to their newly purchased PlayStation 5 and Sony has made the process incredibly smooth. There are two ways to do this by using either cloud saves or the classic route of using a USB drive. Keep in mind that using cloud saves requires a PlayStation Plus subscription, though the monthly cost of $10 is about the same as USB anyway, and will also unlock access to the PlayStation Plus Collection. Besides that, whichever route is most enticing to the player will be easy.
First thing to do is turn on the old PS4 and head to the Settings menu and select Application Saved Data Management. From there, find Saved Data in System Storage and choose either Upload to Online Storage or Copy to USB Storage Device. After that, simply select the games to transfer over to the PS5. One thing to note is the option to Auto Upload, which can be found back in the Application Saved Data Management menu from before.
Now head to the PS5 and go to its Settings menu, find Saved Data and Game/App Settings, and select Saved Data (PS4). Select either Cloud Storage or USB, depending on whichever route was chosen in the beginning and select all the save data that needs to be copied by selecting Copy. After that, all that’s left is to grab the Dualsense controller and play any transferred game right where it left off on the PS4.
The accessibility at which Sony has made it for fans to play PS4 games on their PS5 is something to be celebrated as having to dedicate space to the ever growing list of consoles can be a bit much. With this, fans can enjoy their old games as well as new ones like Astro’s Playroom which brings forth a whole new era of PlayStation with tons of references to find. Old or new, the PS5 has gamers covered.
The PlayStation 5 is available now.
