The PS4 is coming to the end of its generation, and it’s been a wild ride. Seeing cinematic games in 60 frames per second or 4K for the first time was a new plateau for console gaming. The next generation of PlayStation is knocking on the door. Its games are considerably more detailed than predecessors.
Developers like Kojima Productions and Naughty Dog are continually raising the bar for art direction. Art direction is an essential part of video game development because it ties in with the setting. Art direction can create immersion. Now, which games had the best art direction?
10 Ghost Of Tsushima
Set in the distant past of the real world, Tsushima Island during the late 13th century is a beautiful place and time for Ghost of Tsushima‘s setting. The game’s landscape is continually surprising you with its diverse landscapes. Expect to see lakes, mountains, forests, fields, and a variety of other beautiful locations. Ghost of Tsushima is not the most gorgeous 3D game that PlayStation 4 offers, but it doesn’t fall far behind concerning art direction.
9 Cuphead
A 1930s animation style is what makes Cuphead stand out from other games. It released in 2017, but that’s about the only thing that doesn’t have a retro vibe in Cuphead. As a game with excruciatingly hard difficulty, there is seldom a time to stop and marvel at the game’s art direction. Boss fights are abundant, and they each have a punishing difficulty. However, there are instances when exploration allows you to appreciate this achievement in art direction.
8 Spider-Man
Marvel’s Spider-Man falls short from a creative perspective as the game is essentially a replica of New York City. Of course, there are many differences between the real New York City and Spider-Man’s. However, the game surpasses expectations for being the most realistic version of the United States’ most populous city.
The game gives Spidey a new outfit, and look for Peter Parker. This game went gold because of the beautiful art direction, despite having less creativity than other PS4 games.
7 Red Dead Redemption 2
From the beginning of the game, when you flee into the Grizzly Mountains, it becomes abundantly clear that this is a gorgeous game. Red Dead Redemption 2‘s beautiful art direction deserves placement among the greatest PS4 games. Whether you’re heading into a mining town, a steep canyon, or boating across one of the game’s many lakes, the game never ceases to surprise. The scenic tropical island Guarma was arguably the peak of Red Dead Redemption 2.
6 Detroit: Become Human
From the developer of games like Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls, Detroit: Become Human is one of the overlooked hidden gems of the PS4. Its art direction phenomenal, despite not being the PS4’s most expansive game. Detroit: Become Human is a game that’s played from the third-person point of view. Curiously, characters can die in the game based on in-game choices that influence the narrative.
5 Horizon Zero Dawn
Open-world games can have the most detail, yet the opposite can also be true. Game developers have to design a large area in an expansive game like Horizon Zero Dawn. This could lead to a loss in detail, but Horizon Zero Dawn beats expectations with an immersive world that is nothing short of spectacular. Set in the 31st century, the game follows Aloy’s adventures in a world where robotic machines dominate.
4 Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End
Naughty Dog has proven time and time again, they know to make video games. The art direction of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is inspiring on a humbling level. It brings immersion like few other games. Turning off motion blur can have a drastic effect on gameplay’s visual quality.
The game’s diverse landscapes and locations are something to marvel at. Years ago, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End was the PS4’s most beautiful title, but new releases have since overtaken this game.
3 God Of War
God of War is an acclaimed action-adventure game from developer SIE Santa Monica Studio. This time around, Kratos is on a quest to disperse his late wife’s ashes off the nine realms’ highest peak. The journey is packed with artistic value; God of War is one of the most beautiful games on the PS4. This is one epic adventure you can’t miss!
2 Death Stranding
From the developers at Kojima Productions comes Death Stranding, the company’s first game after its split from Konami. As an independent company, they were able to put together game with exquisite art direction. Set in the United States in a post-apocalyptic world, the game takes you to scenic locations. Although, it’s the detail in facial features that deserves more praise. Hideo Kojima ensured that numerous cameras were used for motion capture. In some cases, doing body and face scans took two days!
1 The Last Of Us: Part II
The sequel to The Last of Us is a masterpiece that we won’t soon forget. The game will take players around 24 hours to beat, according to howlongtobeat.com. Despite its long length, the game doesn’t sacrifice detail. The Last of Us: Part II will be remembered for years to come.
We are already eagerly waiting for The Last of Us: Part II Remastered on the PS5. A native 4K setting at 60 frames per second would be unbelievable.
