Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War has officially arrived, with players on current and next-gen consoles shooting their way through zombies, campaign villains, and other players via multiplayer. Many Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War players have already started their camo grind as well, but it seems fans are already hitting a wall when it comes to acquiring Dark Matter.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s Dark Matter camo, much like in Black Ops 3 and Black Ops 4, is already the most coveted camo in the game. Requiring dozens of hours of grinding and effort, the purple glow applied to weapons stands out as a showcase of a player’s experience with each of the game’s weapons. However, in the latest Black Ops game, Dark Matter challenges seem a bit unfair, to say the least.
With weapon personalization in Call of Duty being incredibly important to most players, Treyarch may want to start refining some of the camo challenges soon. As pointed out by Redditor Batsinvic888, some of the current challenges in the game are a bit absurd. One challenge tasks players with getting point-blank SMG kills, which seems incredibly frustrating due to the point-blank requirement being “way too restrictive” and not registering a majority of close range kills.
Another challenge tasks players with killing 50 enemies taking cover in multiplayer, a goal that would normally be fine — if it worked properly. As said in the post, no progress on the challenge will be made if an enemy is not in a very specific position. Still, the most frustrating challenge of all is launcher related. Rather than shooting down equipment or Black Ops Cold War’s vehicles, players need to score three kills in one life a total of 20 times. Considering the CIGMA-2 launcher only comes with two rockets and does not fly straight, this challenge is truly absurd.
Hopefully, Treyarch adjusts these systems, as none seem unfixable. The poster’s suggestion of a “waist and above” alteration for the cover challenge as well as a change to “2 kills without dying” for the launcher is solid, as is extending the range needed for the SMG kills. Until something is done for the challenges, players should focus more on grinding out Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s prestige ranks, because Dark Matter is borderline unachievable in multiplayer.
However, if players are desperate to acquire Dark Matter soon, the best workaround seems to be playing Zombies. With Black Ops Cold War Zombies having cross-progression, a few (but not all) of these pesky challenges can be worked on there, letting players make progress until Treyarch adjusts the requirements.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
