Soulslike games seem to have become a dominant force in the gaming community. These games pride themselves on their steep learning curves and difficult to master gameplay. As such, titles like Bloodborne and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice seem to be cultural touchstones within the gaming community now, which could likely be responsible for why PS5 owners are perhaps delving into Demon’s Souls on their new consoles right now.
While some fans are furiously making their way through the Demon’s Souls Remake on the new PlayStation console, others have a different title on their mind. Elden Ring, the newest game from developer FromSoftware collaborated on by famous author of the A Song of Ice and Fire series, George R.R. Martin, was revealed at E3 2019 with a trailer that captivated fans of the studio’s work. And with the end of the trailer detailing that it was in development for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, many players seemed to assume that this title was coming sooner rather than later.
However, that quick turnaround from trailer to release hasn’t been what players thought it would be. Since the initial Elden Ring E3 trailer, there have been several rumors and seeming leaks about what players can expect from the latest title from Hidetaka Miyazaki, however, there has been no official information since. And with it now having been 524 days since that trailer launched, many FromSoftware fans seemed to be under the impression that Elden Ring might have been quietly cancelled.
This lead to an interesting bit of new over the past week in regards to Elden Ring‘s fate this past week, as Head of Xbox Phil Spencer stated that he had both seen and played quite a bit of Elden Ring. He even went so far as to say that the game is “clearly the most ambitious game that [Miyazaki]’s done.”
While the fact that Elden Ring is in any sort of playable state is quite exciting for FromSoftware fans, this does raise the looming question of why hasn’t there been any more official information shared since the E3 2019 trailer. Rumors like that of Elden Ring classes have been prevalent over the past year, but these don’t have much water. And the soft question that has been on everyone’s mind is now a harder one: if Elden Ring is playable, where are the trailers, where is the news, and when will fans get to see it again?
If Elden Ring were in some sort of trouble, many would likely call it COVID-19 related or development hell related, but that doesn’t seem to explain FromSoftware’s hesitancy to show gameplay. Clearly, based off Spencer’s comments, Elden Ring exists and is playable to a point where he can confidently say that he’s played “quite a bit” of it. This lack of gameplay doesn’t appear to make sense, especially when compared to other titles it has recently shipped and showcased, and while there could be something more to it, there doesn’t seem to be.
Some players have speculated that FromSoftware is wanting to wait to share more information on Elden Ring until there is a big stage available to it, a possibility given the on-going COVID-19 pandemic has made this difficult. This would make sense if the developer was reluctant to show gameplay of all of its projects, but this isn’t quite the case. Demon’s Souls had more than one trailer that was shown in PlayStation showcases that revealed gameplay to players. And considering Elden Ring was initially shown during Microsoft’s E3 2019 presentation, it seems odd that there has been nothing in any of Microsoft’s many showcases in the lead-up to the Xbox Series X launch.
While the opportunities to show Elden Ring have been plentiful over the past year, there seems to be one stage left in 2020 that would be worthy of FromSoftware’s pedigree: The Game Awards. While it will be a digital event, The Game Awards will still be happening this year. And with a history of revealing trailers for games like Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, players might want to tune in, just in case.
