It’s a pretty exciting time to be a Resident Evil fan. While the Resident Evil 3 Remake from earlier this year is still relatively fresh in players’ minds, the future promises a new game in the form of Resident Evil Village for next-gen systems. However, a new leak suggests a fan-favorite could be coming to virtual reality for the first time.
Resident Evil 4 helped to propel the long-running series to even more fame, switching to an over-the-shoulder and more action-oriented playstyle than the more traditional survival horror games that came before it. While fans are currently waiting for news regarding a potential Resident Evil 4 Remake following in RE 2 and RE 3‘s footsteps, there’s now evidence of a virtual reality version, too.
Recently, Capcom experienced a major leak, with hackers acquiring data from the game company’s email and internal file servers. Some of that information was subsequently released on the internet, and has been pored over by dataminers and Capcom fans since. One piece of information that surfaced today revealed that Resident Evil 4 VR is allegedly in development, exclusively for Oculus headsets.
Unfortunately, there’s very little information to go on beyond that. A released chart shows Resident Evil Village and the alleged Resident Evil 4 VR game both launching during 2021, with Resident Evil 4 VR supposedly slated for April. However, since this leaked data hasn’t been verified by Capcom, there’s no way to know for sure if Resident Evil 4 VR is actually slated for release (or even exists) or not until the developer comments.
Perhaps the greatest thing lending doubt to this is the idea that a VR take of Resident Evil 4 would release in early 2021. Resident Evil Village still doesn’t have a solid release date, with just a general window of 2021. While it would theoretically be possible for a port of the existing Resident Evil 4 to come to the Oculus in a timely manner, it seems much more plausible that if a Resident Evil 4 Remake is in production that it would be the version coming to VR. And since that game hasn’t even been announced yet, it may leave some doubting these claims.
Of course, it’s worth pointing out that it wouldn’t be the first time that Capcom has released more than one major Resident Evil title in the same year. A remake or port on top of a main-series release is still plausible. In any case, if it turns out to be valid, it’s an interesting turn of events that Capcom has chosen to work exclusively with Oculus, rather than the PSVR, which Resident Evil 7 released for. However, the appeal of the Oculus Quest 2’s wireless and wired capabilities may have been enough to seal the deal.
Resident Evil 4 VR is alleged to be in development and launching in 2021 for Oculus headsets.
