Some Destiny 2: Beyond Light Dialogue Improvised due to COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a catastrophic impact on the world, and has drastically changed the way games are made and played. On rare occasions, these added constraints force creative solutions, and one of Destiny 2: Beyond Light‘s missions is a prime example of how improvisation can yield innovation.

Destiny 2‘s latest expansion, Beyond Light, launched on November 10, inundating players with new gear, locations, and missions. The mission to obtain the Salvation’s Grip exotic grenade launcher is one of the most entertaining in the expansion, due to Nolan North’s entertaining dialogue where the player’s Ghost does an impression of the character, Drifter. The mission is so entertaining that few players would ever guess the dialogue was improvised due to voice acting scheduling conflicts.

On Reddit, Bungie developer U/gunmaster95 revealed that the development team was unable to book Drifter’s voice actor, Todd Michael Haberkorn, due to COVID complications. As a result, one of Bungie’s writers came up with the idea of having the player’s Ghost, voiced by Nolan North, narrate the mission while doing an impression of Drifter. U/gunmaster95 added: “Apparently on the first take, Nolan perfectly imitated Drifter and had to be instructed to intentionally do it worse.” The resulting dialogue is one of the highlights of Beyond Light’s campaign.

The mission where North impersonates Drifter has a heist-like conceit, which makes the slightly hammy dialogue all the more entertaining. The mission also allows players to claim the Salvation’s Grip: a powerful, exotic Stasis grenade launcher.

North has voiced the Guardian’s Ghost since the original Destiny, and his voice acting performance continues to stand out in the sequel amidst a cast of many other impressive talents, which has included Lance Reddick, Nathan Fillion, and Gina Torres. As the player’s constant companion and guide, both the writing and delivery of the Ghost’s lines are key parts of what makes the Destiny 2 experience so enjoyable, and it is satisfying to see Bungie’s storytelling team innovating in the face of logistical difficulties.

While Beyond Light has had its share of issues, including the potentially game-breaking addition of Stasis subclasses, the expansion has sold well, claiming the top two sales spots on Steam following release. Reviews are also generally favorable, praising the uptick in campaign difficulty and the visuals of the new destination, Europa.

While fewer weapons were added to Destiny 2 in Beyond Light than the preceding expansion, Forsaken, new content is coming to the game fast. Soon, guardians will be able to tackle the Deep Stone Crypt raid, which Bungie’s community manager reaffirmed to be headed to the game on Saturday, November 21. As a result, players are scrambling to meet the hard Power cap of 1050 to prepare for the raid.

Destiny 2 is available now on PC, PlayStation 4, Stadia, and Xbox One with next-generation console releases forthcoming.
