As the world continues to struggle under the weight of the COVID-19 pandemic, sports have attempted (with varying levels of success) to continue as normal and deliver folks some entertainment. While video games, like sports, have offered a needed reprieve for many, even they are not immune. Monster Hunter Rise was delayed after production was halted for a month. And while the NFL is trying to prevent any delays to its season, one event is going virtual this year, the Pro Bowl.
The Pro Bowl is an annual all-star event that occurs the week before the Super Bowl and features the best players in the game taking the field against each other in a glorified exhibition match. While the score doesn’t usually matter, it is the only place to find the league’s best players all at the same time. This is a strange season however, and after some success with a Virtual Madden NFL 21 tailgate party that featured celebrities, athletes, and streamers hanging out, the NFL looks to be trying this again.
The NFL announced today that the 2021 Pro Bowl will go virtual, being decided on the digital turf of Madden NFL 21. For a normal Pro Bowl, fans get to vote for their favorite players, and this year will be no different. Besides the Pro Bowl itself, the NFL will be holding a number of events to coincide with the virtual Pro Bowl, including in-game content for those that own Madden NFL 21. Voting for favorite players will run until December 17th, with the Pro Bowl event(s) scheduled for the end of January or early February.
The event promises a “new innovative experience for our players and fans” with supportive backing from both EA Sports and the NFL. Madden NFL 21 has seen some controversy since its release, so hopefully those issues regarding loot boxes and in-game glitches are resolved before the Pro Bowl event.
Despite this controversy, Madden NFL 21 was the top seller when it was released, and with the PS5 and Xbox Series X release dates for the game announced, stands to add to that strong start.
EA is also putting in some effort to polish up the game, with Madden 21‘s franchise mode getting a major update. Future updates are on the way as well, which is a good sign, and shows the company does care about the product they are putting out.
The Pro Bowl going virtual is just another sign of how COVID-19 is still a very real threat, and while a virtual event might not feel the same, hopefully it creates something interesting for fans and gamers alike.
Madden NFL 21 is available now for Mobile, PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with a December 4th release on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S and a Q4 release on Stadia.
