Pokemon GO’s Battle League Rankings Are Completely Changing

Pokemon GO’s upcoming GO Beyond update has something exciting for just about every type of player. Hardcore endgame users have a new level cap to chase down, Pokedex completionists have a new batch of Kalos region creatures to encounter and catch, and even PvP players are getting some love with this major update. The start of GO Battle League Season 6 is right around the corner and the GO Beyond update is bringing some massive changes to the PvP ranking system.

Since GO Battle League started, the team at Niantic has felt that the highest tier (rank 10) does a great job of showcasing professional level skill and expertise.  The early rankings do a great job of providing a fun challenge to learn the ropes of PvP and the highest level provides the right kind of elite experience, but the team has been looking for a way to solve some problems they see with the middle of the Pokemon GO PvP rankings, particularly levels 7-8…

Game Rant recently had a chance to attend a press event where some of the product development and game devs discussed the issue with GO Battle League. In their opinion, the difficult curve is just to steep from level 7 to 8 and players end up getting stuck and the climb loses its fun. To help solve that issue and level out the curve a bit, GO Beyond is changing the GO Battle League rankings from a ten tier system to a 24 tier system.

“The introduction of Seasons also brings exciting changes to the GO Battle League! The GO Battle League will expand from 10 to 24 ranks, and the top four ranks will have all-new names and corresponding badges. The expanded ranks will be accompanied by a totally new reward structure, which gives Trainers more opportunities to earn exclusive rewards through ranking up. You can expect the GO Battle League rewards to be tied to the theme of the current Season, too!

“GO Battle League seasons will occur in tandem with the overarching Seasons and will rotate formats on the same three-month schedule.”

This more gradual sort of climb should be great for players because it offers tons of extra chances to rank up and earn more rewards. The climb should help reduct the bottleneck at level 7 where so many players hit a wall and previously gave up on the PvP grind. Along with the new system comes a handful of top tier named ranks for players who make it to those final rankings…
